Warriors made #5 HPU battle to gain win

4/17/2012 6:36:00 PM

TURLOCK — Stacked with a number of ranked players from all over the world, No. 5 Hawaii Pacific handed Cal State Stanislaus its only home loss of the season in a 8-1 match on Tuesday.

Unlike some of its other matches of the season, the powerhouse women's tennis program from Honolulu found the Warriors fighting hard to defend their home court.

"I like what I saw today. You made them have to work really hard at our place to get that win," Stanislaus head coach Verek Visaraga told his team in the post-matach meeting. "You did everything I asked of you and I am really proud (of the efforts today)."

The Warriors came out on top at No. 1 doubles, where Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng, ranked No. 19 in Division II as a doubles team, beat HPU's Vivan Hansen and Magdalena Smejova, 8-5, to improve to 11-1 on the season.

However, Stanislaus (8-4) dropped the other two doubles matches heading into singles competition. Hawaii Pacific (14-4) proved to be too tough in individual play with four Top 20 ranked regional  players in the lineup.

In the marquee match-up between two nationally ranked players, No. 9 Zora Vickova of Czech Republic, defeated No. 17 Preikschas, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 2 singles featuring two athletes from Australia, No. 33 Celina Goetti out-lasted Davina Meza in three sets. Meza rallied to blank Goetti in the second set, but Goetti rolled off four straight points to end the third (super-tiebreaker scoring) to win 10-6. Smejova, also of Czech Republic, downed Eng at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2.

Vivian Hansen (Germany), Ielyzaveta Rybakova (Ukraine) and Carrie Shuler (the only HPU player from the U.S.) all won their singles matches over the Warriors.

Cal State Stanislaus will wrap up its regular season at home on Friday when it hosts UC San Diego. It will be senior day for Preikschas, Eng, Lindsey West and Heather Cotter.
