Walters net high but Warriors fall short to SF State

1/4/2013 9:47:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — Marcus Walters scored a career-high to lead the Warriors but the visiting San Francisco State Gators used a strong shooting touch and made their free throws late in the game for a 80-73 decision Friday night.

Walters scored 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting for his best game at Cal State Stanislaus before the Warriors fell to 4-5 overall and 1-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Walters, who also had eight rebounds, surpassed his previous best of 19 from Dec. 18 against Cal Baptist.

Ray Mitchell picked up his fifth consecutive double-digit scoring game with 12 points along with a team-best nine rebounds to pace Cal State Stanislaus. Marcellus Pullum scored 11 with three three-pointers.

Robbie Herndon's three-pointer at 5:52 left in the second half sparked the Gators offense as SF State turned an one-point deficit into a 13-point lead, at 75-62 with 1:53 to go.

That task was also made possible for the Gators as they were sent to the free throw line often — and they promptly converted. San Francisco State, which improved to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA, were 26 of 32 from the foul line. After making their final field goal of the night at 2:36 to go, the Gators made 9 of 12 free throws in the final two-plus minutes of the game.

On the other side of the court, Cal State Stanislaus had just 12 tries at the free throw line and made nine.

Four Gators scored 10 or more points with Calvin Otiono leading the way with 19 points. Brandon Tatum had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

The Warriors will host Sonoma State (4-5, 2-3 CCAA), which lost at Chico State 82-65, tomorrow night.
