Box Score ROHNERT PARK — The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team once again out-lasted a CCAA opponent in the second half and used balanced scoring as the Warriors improved to 5-0 with a 76-61 win at Sonoma State on Friday.
The Warriors open the season 5-0 for the first time since 2000 — when
Katie Staack, the eldest member of this year's team, was 9 years old.
Yes, it's been 13 years since a Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team began the year 5-0, during former head coach Leann Millar's final season. That team also went 6-0, a feat the new Warriors will try to match on Saturday when they take on San Francisco State, which beat Chico State, 82-65, Friday.
"It's a wonderfual accomplishment for our program, to make this type of turnaround from last year to this season," head coach
Wayman Strickland said. "It's a two-part equation with the coaching staff and student-athletes working hard and preparing to compete. Most of the credit goes to the student-athletes following and executing the game plan."
The Warriors, also 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, was led by four starters in double-digits in scoring.
Lauren Godde scored 16,
Briana Cotton poured in 15,
Jasmine Washington chipped in 12 and
Riley Holladay netted 10 points.
Holladay also led the team with eight rebounds and three assists. Godde also grabbed six boards.
After Sonoma State used a 9-2 run to close out the first half to even the score at 31-31, the Seawolves began the second half looking to end the Stanislaus early-season run. Sonoma State used a 5-0 run for a 36-31 lead.
However, a Washington jumper got the Stanislaus offense going. The Warriors would use three key runs on offensive with the help of strong defense to pull ahead.
"We played with more consistent pressure on the ball and paying attention to the details in rotation in the second half," Strickland said.
Trailing 40-37, a 10-0 run swung the momentum in favor of the Warriors with a 47-40 lead. With a six-point lead at 8:06,
Erin Godde started an 11-2 spurt that increased the CSUS lead to 13, at 63-50.
Then, the Warriors closed out the game on a 6-0 in the final 93 seconds for the 15-point win.
Stanislaus held Sonoma State (1-4, 0-1 CCAA) to 9-for-23 shooting in the second half. The Warriors also out-rebounded the Seawolves 20-10 in the second half. The Warriors also scored 22 points off 19 SSU turnovers in the game.
