TURLOCK – The Warriors continue to roll through the 2013 season with another win over San Francisco State by a score of 2-0 on Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
The 11th ranked Warriors remain undefeated at 6-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. In the series against SF State, the dominance continued as Stanislaus is now 15-0-4 in the last 19 meetings against the Gators over 12 seasons.
Despite having 10 shots in the first half, the Warriors went into the locker room facing a scoreless game. However, they triumphed in the second half with another 10 shots and two goals from senior Apryl Whitney.
"We played fantastic soccer tonight. At halftime I told the team we just needed to be more dangerous," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "We were looking for the perfect pass or shot in the first half. They responded really well."
San Francisco State fell to to 2-3-2 overall, 1-3-1 CCAA after being out-shot 20-1 by the Warriors.
Whitney not only scored two goals in the second half, but they were her first two goals of the season. Her first header goal was assisted by Emily Relles, on a corner kick, in the 57th minute. Her second goal was unassisted in the 72nd minute as she dribbled up and shot in open field to left top corner of the net.
"We really wanted to keep possession of the ball and just play our game, and not try to play their game, because they're a really physical team," Whitney said about the Warriors mindset going into Friday's game.
"Apryl is an outstanding goal scorer. One of the things that makes this team so dangerous is that there are lots of players that can put the ball in the back of the net," added Bolton.
Whitney is now the ninth different Warrior to score at least a goal this season through seven matches.
Her statement proved to be true while the Gators held the Warriors from scoring throughout the first 56 minutes of the game and allowing Gator goalkeeper Allison Land to earn six saves. The Warriors defense proved to be stronger as they kept the ball away from the Gators, only allowing one shot on goal, which Stanislaus' goalkeeper Chelsea Lewandowski picked up the save. Cal State Stanislaus also had nine corner kicks against SFSU's one.
"We kept possession so well it really limited what SF State could do offensively," said Bolton.
Cal State Stanislaus will be home again on Sunday morning when they host Cal State Monterey Bay (3-3-1, 2-2-1 CCAA) at 11:30 a.m.
