SAN BERNARDINO — A road trip sweep is hard to come by in the California Collegiate Athletic Association due to the grueling back-to-back game schedules. But the Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team accomplished the feat Saturday night after a tough 69-61 victory at Cal State San Bernardino.
Jasmine Washington led the team with 17 points as the Warriors won both games of the San Diego-San Bernardino trip for the first time ever and improved to 5-1 in the CCAA (8-2 overall).
Briana Cotton scored 14 points and
Lauren Godde had nine points and 10 rebounds to pace the Warriors.
Cassidy Sanders-Curry also chipped in nine points and pull seven boards coming off the bench to put-in 30 minutes of play.
One night after snapping a 20-game skid against the UCSD Tritions, the Warriors picked up their first victory at San Bernardino's Coussoulis Arena since 2004. The win also extended Stanislaus' CCAA away-game winning streak to three — the first time that has happened since 2002.
Against Cal State San Bernardino (1-8, 0-6 CCAA) Saturday night, the game was much closer than expected given the teams' records entering the contest. CSUSB jumped out to a 12-4 lead until the Warriors used a 22-6 run, which included three three-pointers, to swing the momentum.
Still, the teams battled to a 33-33 tie at halftime, thanks to the Coyotes getting chances at the free throw line and Stanislaus leaders
Riley Holladay and Godde in foul trouble. CSUSB was 8 for 14 at the foul line in the first half and ended the night 18 for 30 — a number the Warriors didn't come close to matching-up until the final minutes of the game.
The Coyotes' final lead was 55-54 with 5:28 left to play, but Stanislaus put on a late surge to pull away. A 7-0 run capped by a Washington layup gave the Warriors a six-point lead, 61-55, with 2:30 remaining.
Washington again came up big down the stretch, scoring seven of her points in the final three and a half minutes of the game. Her jumper at 1:01 to go gave the Warriors' their biggest lead since the first half at eight, 64-56.
The defense again made a difference in the second half as the Warriors held CSUSB to 25 percent shooting (8-for-32). Alecia Mack had 17 points to lead the Coyotes. Trinidee Trice scored 11 points in the first half but was held scoreless on 0-for-6 shooting in the second half.
The Warriors will begin a four-game homestand starting on Friday when they host Cal State L.A. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Arena.
