TURLOCK — In another great-team-effort kind of afternoon, the Cal State Stanislaus women's tennis team held court to defeat visiting Hawaii Hilo, 7-2, on the campus courts.
J'Ana Diamond blazed by her opponent in singles play and
Jessica Laurie blanked her opposition in the decisive set as they scored the key team points in the victory.
Analyssa Tallas held on to avoid a third set and
Jessica Stokes rallied from 0-1 to win two more points for Stanislaus.
After the Warriors fought and swept through doubles play that included two close matches at No. 2 and No. 3, they held a 3-0 lead going into the singles competition.
Diamond easily disposed Rachel Sugiyama at No. 3 in stright sets, 6-1, 6-2. Then, Laurie blanked Chelsea Sato 6-0 in the third set to win her No. 2 singles match to score the team's fifth point to secure the win.
Tallas followed by holding off a surge by Morrisa Kahakui in the second before the Warrior freshman rallied to close out her match in two sets. Stokes also finished strong after going down 0-1 with 6-3 in set two and a 10-2 super tiebreaker win in the third.
Cal State Stanislaus improved to 4-5 on the season and will host Division I UC Davis on Friday at 2 p.m. The match was a late addition to the schedule this week.
