Tennis team begins PacWest Tournament play Wednesday

SURPRISE, Ariz. — For the second consecutive season, the Stanislaus State women's tennis team has qualified and will participate in the Pacific West Conference Tennis Championships. The Warriors will begin first round play on Wednesday at 9 a.m. against Point Loma.

The Warriors, seeded No. 11 in the 12-team tournament, square-off against No. 6 Point Loma — a team that  went 15-7 during the regular season. The Lions are coming off a 9-0 win over Concordia-Irvine.

Stanislaus State will send out the usual lineup from the 4-7 regular season campaign. Jaella Conway will lead off the team at the top of the singles depth chart with her 9-4 dual-match record. Cassidy Ferrell, who was 7-5 in dual play, is at No. 2, where she posted a 6-1 record in 2017. Rounding out the Warriors' lineup, in order, will be J'Ana Diamond, Ebone Qualls, Sooni Seul and Kristi Van Diver.

In doubles action, Conway and Ferrell pair-up as the No. 10 ranked team in the West Region. Diamond and Qualls will be at No. 2 doubles, followed by Seul and Van Diver.

Seniors Conway, Diamond and Seul have been key to the team's progress.

"The three seniors have been a huge part of the success for the Warriors this year, helping propel them into the PacWest championships for the second year in a row," said coach Verek Visaraga. "All three of these ladies were hold pivotal roles on the team this year and hope to continue to work hard and bring in the wins during the tournament in Arizona this week."

The PacWest Championships is being held at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center, just outside of Phoenix, Ariz.

The top four seeds, BYU-Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific, Academy of Art and Cal State L.A., received a first-round bye. The other first round matches include No. 7 Sonoma State vs. No. 10 Holy Names, No. 5 Azusa Pacific vs. No. 12 Dixie State and No. 8 Concordia taking on No. 9 Dominican. Winners of the first round matches will face one of the top four seeds while the loser will play in a consolation match on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
