SURPRISE, Ariz. — At the Pacific West Conference Tennis Championships, the Stanislaus State women's tennis team dropped its first round match on Wednesday to No. 19 ranked Point Loma, 5-1, at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex outside of Phoenix.
The Warriors were led by
J'Ana Diamond and
Ebone Qualls as the duo posted a victory at the No. 2 doubles position over opponents Shelby Groeneveld and Taylor McGowan, 8-5. Diamond and Qualls improved to 6-7 at No. 2 this season in dual-match play.
As a team Stanislaus State will play in the consolation bracket match against Holy Names, the 10th seed in the event. The Warriors are the 11th seeded team.
Against Point Loma (16-7), the top doubles team of
Jaella Conway and
Cassidy Ferrell posted a challenge against Nikki Newella nd Region von Koch before losing 8-4. The Lions then posted wins at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1 and the No. 5 and No. 6 spots to end the match early.
Per championship tournament format, matches are completed once a team reach five points.
All higher seeded teams won on Wednesday, setting up the top eight teams in the quarterfinals. Concordia, Azusa Pacific and Sonoma State also advanced to face the top four seeded teams, which had a first round bye.
