SURPRISE, Ariz. — As expected, the consolation match between the Warriors and Holy Names at the Pacific West Conference Tennis Championships was going to be a close one.
In the end, Stanislaus State prevailed to win 5-2 over the Hawks in its season finale, posting the another PacWest tournament victory. During the regular season, Stan State and Holy Names had split their series, each with a 5-4 win on home courts.
Thursday night, the Warriors ended the 2017 campaign on a high note with the strong victory, snapping a five-match losing streak. All three doubles teams gave the Warriors the early 3-0 lead.
Jaella Conway and
Cassidy Ferrell, the No. 10 ranked doubles team in the West, easily took down Rutendo Gwaze and Eliza McKean.
However, it was the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams battled it out with the Warriors posting 9-8 and 9-7 wins by
J'Ana Diamond and
Ebone Qualls at No. 2 and
Sooni Seul and
Kristi Van Diver pulling out the win at No. 3.
Ferrell would record the team's fourth point at No. 2 singles as she easily disposed McKean in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. After HNU picked up two points to get within 4-2, Diamond clinched the win at No. 3 singles play with a cool 6-4, 6-4 win against Dominique Ernet.
The Warriors were also ahead at both No. 1 and No. 4 singles play but those contests were unfinished once a team reaches five points for the team victory.
Stanislaus finished the year 5-10 overall in matches against NCAA programs. The Warriors have gone 1-1 in each of the two PacWest Tournaments.
