TURLOCK — The 12th ranked UC San Diego Tritons spoiled senior day for
Ebone Qualls.
Facing the nationally ranked team didn't damped the Warriors spirit, however, as Stanislaus State batted closely in doubles competition before the stronger and deeper UCSD team prevailed.
The Warriors challenged the Tritons in doubles play, pushing all three matches to the brink before UCSD sweep all three sets. At No. 1 doubles,
Cassidy Ferrell and
Kayla Nguyen took the UCSD pair all the way to the tiebreakers before losing.
The top doubles match featured two top 40 players in Division II. After #28 Ashley Chao win the first set narrowly 7-5, Ferrell batted back and led at 3-0 and 4-2 in the second. However, Chao rallied back to surpass Ferrell for another 7-5 win.
The match was the Warriors' final home contest of the season. Stan State had won four straight before Thursday's match. Qualls, the only senior on the team, lost at No. 5 singles, 6-2 and 6-4. She had also won four straight singles matches until today.
The Warriors, now 6-10, will travel to face Nevada on Friday.
