Warriors No. 9 seed in PacWest Women's Tennis Championship tournament

IRVINE – The fields for the 2018 PacWest Men's and Women's Tennis Championships were finalized Sunday and the official brackets announced Monday by the conference office. The tournaments return to the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center in Surprise, Ariz., April 18-21, hosted by Concordia University Irvine.

For the third year, the women's tournament is a 12-team affair. Hawai'i Pacific is the top seed in the women's field for the first time, followed by Academy of Art, Azusa Pacific and Point Loma. 

Stanislaus State will be the No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 Hawaii Hilo in the first round match-up on Wednesday, April 18 at 9 a.m. A win over the Vulcans will place the Warriors in a quarterfinal match against the top four seeded teams on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The Warriors (7-11) will be playing in the conference tournament for the third straight season. In 2016-17, the Warriors lost in the opening round to Point Loma before ending the season with a consolation victory over Holy Names. In 2015-16, Stan State lost the first match to Concordia Irvine before beating Dixie State in the consolation bracket.

This year's Stan State squad features top player Cassidy Ferrell who is ranked No. 46 in the latest ITA Rankings. The PacWest features five players in the top 10 in Division II with Lena Lutzeier of Hawaii Pacific at No. 2 and Jensyn Warren of Sonoma State at No. 2.

Head coach Verek Visaraga will roll out this lineup for the first match against Hawaii Hilo. Kayla Nguyen will follow Ferrell at No. 2 singles while Mililaana Proft at No. 3. Megan Hagerty, Ebone Qualls and Taylor Galya rounds out the six singles players in that order with Briana Hooks as the alternate. In double play, it will be the same lineup all season with Ferrell and Nguyen at No. 1, followed by Hagerty and Galya with Qualls pairing up with Proft.
