SURPRISE, Ariz. — The No. 2 ranked Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team continues to dominate the West as the Sharks defeated Stanislaus State, 5-0, in a quarterfinal round match at the PacWest Tennis Championship at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
Hawaii Pacific (16-2) easily took three points in doubles competition and only needed two wins in singles play to end the contest.
Lara Meccico and Oceane Adam both won their singles matches in straight sets to secure the victory, the fifth in a row for the Sharks. Lena Lutzeier returned to the No. 1 ranking in the nation yesterday and led her match 6-2, 1-1 against No. 47 Cassidy Ferrell at No. 1 singles before the match was called.
Lutzeier and Adam won their doubles set at the No. 1 position, 8-1, over Ferrell and Kayla Nguyen. Meccico and Barbora Kijasova won at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, against Megan Hagerty and Taylor Galya, while Leticia Dos Santos and Debora Echeverria won at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, over Ebone Qualls and Miliaana Proft. Hawai`i Pacific had won the first set in three of the four unfinished matches before Adam clinched the win at No. 3 singles.
Stanislaus State, playing in the winners bracket for the first time in the three trips to this event, will move to the consolation bracket. The Warriors will face Sonoma State Friday at 9 a.m. The fifth seeded SSU Seawolves lost to fourth seed Point Loma, 5-1, on Thursday.
In the other two quarterfinal matches, third seed Azusa Pacific blanked Dominican, 5-0, and No. 2 seed Academy of Art defeated Concordia Irvine, 5-1.
