Pro Soccer exhibition featured six former Warriors

2/21/2019 7:40:00 PM

It was a homecoming for five of the Academica SC players and head coach when Stanislaus State hosted the friendly between the side versus Fresno FC on Feb. 5.

Fans braved the wet and cold to witness another professional soccer match at Warrior Stadium between the Turlock team in the NPSL (National Premier Soccer League) and USL's Fresno FC.

Five former Warriors played on the Academica side with Ramiro Ceja, Daniel Galvan, Gerardo Cazares, Manny Villegas and Desmond Madrigal getting to showcase their skills after college.

Fresno FC took the lead 1-0 into the locker room at halftime, but it was Academica who answered shortly after the whistle to draw the score even 1-1 with a Cazares' goal that he bent into the upper right corner of the net.

Fresno FC went on to add two more in the second half, and in the waning minutes Academica made it exciting by adding a late goal before Fresno FC post the 3-2 exhibition win.

The Academica SC team is coached by former Stan State standout Sergio Souza.

The match was the third professional soccer event at Warrior Stadium. The facility played host to the MLS's San Jose Earthquakes and Sacramento Republic FC in 2014. In 2017 Fresno FC and Sacramento Republic FC also met at Stan State.

During the summer of 2014, the San Jose Earthquakes PDSL team had its home games at Warrior Stadium.
