Warriors achieve record-breaking academic excellence for Fall 2020

2/1/2021 2:00:00 PM

Stanislaus State student-athletes achieved high academic excellence during the Fall 2020 semester. Despite the pandemic, the student-athletes were able to juggle academics and athletics finishing with an overall department grade point average of 3.275.

This is the highest GPA that Stanislaus State has on record for its student-athletes beating the previous Spring 2020 GPA of 3.215. Along with this accomplishment, 30 athletes earned 4.0s in the Fall semester.

"Our Warrior vision is to provide a championship experience to our student-athletes.  We aim to win in the classroom, win in the community, and win in competition," said Director of Athletics Terry Donovan. "While competition is not possible at this time, we recently won our conference award for community service and now can pair that honor with record setting academic success."

There were 98 student-athletes that earned themselves a place on the Dean's List. To be on the Dean's List, students must earn a minimum of 12 units of credit of graded coursework and achieve a 3.5 GPA for all coursework at the University.

Many student-athletes are not only managing academics and athletics but they also have several jobs and busy personal lives. Although the students were not competing in Fall 2020, they were continuing to hold team meetings, workouts, drills and more on Zoom.

Alissa Aragon, Assistant Athletics Director, Student-Athlete Development and Senior Woman Administrator, has helped the student-athletes through this difficult time and knows how hard they worked to finish the semester with so much success.

"Huge congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff for finishing another semester in the pandemic by smashing our previous records! Our coaches and academic support staff continually go above and beyond to utilize resources, reach out for support, and work tirelessly to help their teams succeed," said Aragon.

Aragon not only helps Stan State student-athletes through their academics but is one they often go to for support in their daily lives.

"The perseverance of our student-athletes to continue to make their academic goals a top priority while also juggling jobs, taking care of families, and managing their own mental health is truly something to celebrate," said Aragon. "This is truly the Warrior Way."

There were six teams that set new records for team GPAs as well as the Men's Soccer team having its highest increase being over a 3.0 for the first time.

Donovan said that it is such an accomplishment for the student-athletes to break so many academic records and do it all during a global pandemic.

"I couldn't be prouder of our Warrior Family during these difficult times," said Donovan.

Among these amazing accomplishments, 42 Stan State student-athletes earned their place on the 2020 CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll. This distinction is given to student-athletes who are a sophomore in academic standing and GPA of at least 3.3.
