Warriors will Finish Calendar Year with a Conference Matinee Game, New Year’s Eve, at Cal State Monterey Bay

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will end its 2023 calendar year with on New Year's Eve with a matinee conference game at Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Warriors and Otters will tip off at 1pm at The Kelp Bed on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.  
 
WARRIORS:  Stan State is 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA after splitting its two games at home against Seattle Pacific and Alaska Anchorage.  The Warriors are averaging 65.7 points per game while giving up 63.9 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 42 to 38.1.  The duo of Mya Blake and Liliana Marques lead the way for Stan State with their 12.5 and 12.2 respective scoring averages.  Marques leads the team with her 84% shooting from the line and 27 treys made.  Joia Armstrong and Aunika Hornung each are averaging a team leading 5.8 rebounds per game followed by Taylor Pilot's 5.6 average.  Pilot leads the team with her 41 assists and 29 steals.  Hornung has blocked a team high 14 shots.  Jadyn Patterson leads Stan State with her 46% shooting from three-point land.
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team.  He is 119-167 in his coaching stint at Stan State.  In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament.  In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals.  He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections.  Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees.  Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School.  Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia.  His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.

SPLITSVILLE :  Stan State went 1-1 in its final two non-conference games of the regular season this week at The Fitz.  The Warriors defeated Seattle Pacific 70-66 on Dec. 14 and lost 60-46 to Alaska Anchorage on Dec. 17.  In the two games, Stan State averaged 58 points per game while gave up 63 points per game. Liliana Marques led the way with her 11.0 scoring average and five treys made.  Mya Blake recorded a team leading seven steals and dished out six assists while shooting a team leading 83.3% from the line.  Joia Armstrong blocked a team high three shots and averaged a team high 5.5 rebounds per game.  Iman Addison shot a team best 45.5% from the field.  
 
ALL ALONE IN FIRST PLACE:  With their two wins Dec. 7 and 9 and other teams losing, Stan State sits all alone in first place with its 4-0 CCAA record heading into the Holiday Break.  Sonoma State and Cal State San Marcos are tied for first place each with a 3-1 conference record.  Six teams are tied for fourth place all with a 2-2 record in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, Chico State, Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal State San Bernardino, and Cal State East Bay.  The Warriors return to CCAA action on New Year's Eve in Seaside, Calif., for. A 1pm match-up with Cal State Monterey Bay.  
 
STREAK SNAPPED AT SIX  The Warriors had their season long six-game winning streak snapped in their 60-46 loss to Alaska Anchorage on Dec. 17.  The last time the Warriors have won six games in a row f 2021-22 season.  That season, the Warriors won nine games in row dating from Nov. 19, 2021, to Dec. 19, 2021.  They had their streak snapped in a 67-58 loss at Chico State on Jan. 2, 2022.  
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Three Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in Taylor Pilot, Joia Armstrong, and Lyric Richardson.   Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18.  Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21.  She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds.  She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double of her career in the Warrior uniform.
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:  Stan State junior transfer Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.  She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games.  For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.  She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.  Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land.  The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.  
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  Taylor Pilot is 21st in the nation with her 29 steals and Cookie Marques is 30th with her 27 treys made.  As a team, the Warriors are 23rd in the nation with their 36.7% shooting from three-point land.  
 
CCAA LEADERS:  Stan State is second in the CCAA in field goal percentage defense (36.5%) and three-point field goal percentage (36.7%).  The Warriors are third in three-point field goal percentage defense (28.3%) and blocked shots per game (2.64).  They are fifth in scoring defense (63.9 ppg), treys made per game (6.6), turnover margin (+1.50), and steals (10.14 per game).
 
Taylor Pilot is third with her 2.6 steals per game average, fourth with her +1.3 assist/turnover ratio, and fifth with her 3.7 assists per game average.  Liliana Marques is fifth with her 84% shooting from the line and seventh with her 1.9 treys made per game.  Mya Blake is eighth in field goal percentage (43.2%) and ninth in treys made per game (1.8).  Joia Armstrong is fifth with her 1.0 blocked shots per game average.  
 
OTTERS IN REVIEW:  Cal State Monterey Bay is 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA.  The Otters snapped their four-game losing streak with an 85-65 victory over Lincoln (Calif.) on Dec. 17.  They are averaging 70.6 points per game while giving up 71.9 points per game.  CSUMB is outrebounding its opponents 37.7 to 36.7.  Ciarah Michalik leads the way with her 12.6 points per game average, 28 assists, and 81.6% shooting from the line.  Sarah Shaw is averaging 11.2 points per game while shooting a team leading 50% from the field.  She is tied with Deyliana Lewis for the team lead each with nine blocked shots.  Michalik has made a team high 12 treys and a team leading 41% of her attempts from beyond the arc.  Lewis leads the team with her 16 steals and Shaw is averaging a team high 9.3 rebounds per game. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series 21-17 and have won eight of the last ten meetings between the two teams.  CSUMB won both games last year 93-63 on January 21 in Seaside.  Cookie Marques had 11 points for the Warriors.  Stan State lost 70-62 to the Otters on February 16 in Turlock.  Joia Armstrong had 14 points for the Warriors.  The last Warrior victory was 75-49 in Turlock on February 12, 2022, behind Marques' 23 points and four steals.  Stan State last won in Seaside on January 20, 2022, 60-50 behind Marques with 19 points and Taylor Pilot's 18 points four assists, eight rebound performance.
