Women’s Basketball Looks to Continue Winning Ways in Los Angeles

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will look to extend its three-game winning streak this week with a pair of conference games in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.  The Warriors are coming off a 3-0 week in which they began CCAA play 2-0.  They return to the court this Thursday, December 7 for a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.  Stan State will end its weekend with a 1pm tip-off with Cal State Los Angeles this Saturday, December 9 in Los Angeles. 
 
WARRIORS:  Stan State is 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA after its 3-0 week at home.  The Warriors are averaging 67.7 points per game while giving up 64.9 points per game.  They are outrebounding their opponents 39.9 to 39.8.  Mya Blake and Liliana Marques each are averaging 12.5 points per game.  Joia Armstrong leads the team with her 6.7 rebounding average and nine blocked shots.  Taylor. Pilot has recorded a team leading 19 steals and dished out a team high 34 assists.  Lyric Richardson is shooting a team high 50% from the field while Liliana Marques is shooting a team leading 36% from three-point range.  Marques has made a team high 17 treys and connected on a team high 82.1% of her attempts from the charity stripe.  
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team.  He is 116-166 in his coaching stint at Stan State.  In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament.  In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals.  He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections.  Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees.  Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School.  Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia.  His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.

THREE-GAME HOME STAND:  The Warriors went 3-0 in their three-game home stand last week with victories over Fresno Pacific (65-57), Cal State East Bay (69-46), and San Francisco State (77-72).  Mya Blake and Liliana Marques led the way with their 11.7 and 11.0 scoring averages.  Lyric Richardson shot 58.8% from the field and Jadyn Patterson connected on 66.7% of her attempts from beyond the arc.  The Warrior defense held their opponents to just 34% shooting from the field including just 27% from three-point land.  They also forced 66 turnovers and recorded 34 steals in the three games for Stan State.  Taylor Pilot led the way with her 11 assists and nine steals with Aunika Hornung recording six blocked shots. 
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:  Stan State junior transfer Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.  She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games.  For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.  She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.  Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land.  The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.  
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Three Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in Taylor Pilot, Joia Armstrong, and Lyric Richardson.   Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18.  Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21.  She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds.  She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double of her career in the Warrior 23-point victory over Cal State East Bay on Nov. 30. She scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to go with her two steals and two blocked shots.  For their careers, Armstrong has three double-doubles and Pilot has two.
 
DIFFERENT WARRIORS:  In their three victories last week a different Warrior led the way for Stan State in all three games.  Against FPU, four players scored in double figures led by Mya Blake (17 points) followed by the trio of Liliana Marques (13 points), Joia Armstrong (13 points), and Taylor Pilot (10 points).  In their win over CSUEB, Lyric Richardson had 13 points and 11 rebounds while Pilot scored 13 points, dished out four assists, and recorded fours teals.  Aunika Hornung added 10 points for the hosts.  In their five-point win over SF State, Alexis Woodson scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds, and grabbed two steals.  Marques added 13 points and Jadyn Armstrong chipped in 12 points.  
 
CCAA LEADERS:  In the recent CCAA stats, the Warriors are second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense (26.4%) and field goal percentage defense (36.7%).  They are third in three-point field goal percentage (36.3%), fourth in rebounding (39.9 rpg), scoring defense (64.9 ppg), and offensive rebounding (13.9 ppg) while they are sixth in scoring margin (+2.8).  
 
Taylor Pilot is second with her 34 assists and 19 steals.  She is third in assists per game (4.3), fifth in steals per game (2.4), and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.3).  Joia Armstrong is third with her nine blocked shots and tenth with her 0.9 blocked shot per game average.  Liliana Marques is sixth with her 82% free throw percentage and Mya Blake is eighth with her 44% field goal percentage.  
 
CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS:  The Toros enter their game on Thursday with the Warriors with a 2-5 overall record and a 0-2 CCAA record.  They have lost their last three games in a row including both their CCAA games last week 83-77 in overtime at Sonoma State and 67-62 at Cal State San Marcos.  CSUDH is averaging 62.3 points per game while giving up 65.3 points per game.  The Toros are being outrebounded 38 to 37.7.  Three Toros are averaging double figures in scoring in Nala Williams (12.7 ppg), Asia Jordan (12.2 ppg), and Danyell Booker (10.5 ppg).  Williams leads the team with her 7.3 rebounding average.  Joe'l Benoit has dished out a team high 29 assists and Malia Goldsmith has recorded a team leading 13 steals.  Kylie Gallick leads the team with her 54% shooting from the field and six threes made while Amaya Snowden is shooting a team best 84% from the line.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State Dominguez Hills leads the all-time series 16-10 with the Toros winning three of the last five meetings.  The Toros swept the series last year 83-54 in Carson on Jan. 26 and 68-56 on Jan. 7 in Turlock.  The last Warrior victory was 80-74 on Feb. 18, 2020, in Carson.  Six Warriors scored in double digits including current assistant coach Kyanna Davis with 10 points.
 
CAL STATE LOS ANGELES: The Golden Eagles are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA.  They split their games this weekend losing 73-43 at Cal State San Marcos and defeating Sonoma State 78-60.  CSULA is averaging 73 points per game while giving up 69.2 points per game.  The Golden Eagles are being outrebounded 39.3 to 38.3.  Two players are averaging double digits in scoring in Nicole Flennaugh (14.0 ppg) and Lily Buggs (10.8 ppg).  Donja Payne is averaging a team high 7.8 rebounds per game to go with her five blocked shots.  Flennaugh leads the Golden Eagles with her 10 steals, 24 assists, 100% shooting from the line, 50% shooting from threes, and 16 treys made.  Alicia Jones is shooting a team high 52% from the field.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State Los Angeles leads the all-time series with the Warriors 15-14.  The Golden Eagles have won the last five meetings including both last year.  They defeated the Warriors 74-55 in Los Angeles on Feb 9.  Joia Armstrong had 10 points and 9 rebounds for Stan State.  CSULA defeated Stan State 89-68 in Turlock on Dec. 3.  Liliana Marques had 12 points and Joia Armstrong chipped in 10 points for the Warriors.  The last Warrior victory was 66-54 on Feb. 28, 2019, in Turlock as current assistant coach Kyanna Davis had 19 points.

UP NEXT: Stan State returns home on Dec. 14 for a 5:30pm non-conference game with Seattle Pacific.  They will be in Reno, Nev., for a 1pm exhibition game with the University of Nevada on Dec. 16.  The Warriors will back home for a non-conference game at 2pm against Alaska Anchorage on Dec. 17.  They will return to CCAA play with a 1pm game on New Year's Eve in Seaside against Cal State Monterey Bay.
