Warriors Defeat Academy of Art and Western New Mexico in Day Two of the Stanislaus State Labor Day Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif.--- In Day Two of the Stanislaus State Labor Day Volleyball Tournament at the Fitzpatrick Arena today, the Warriors went 2-0 with a five-set victory over Academy of Art (25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 15-9) and a sweep of Western New Mexico (25-12, 25-10, 25-10) to improve to 2-1.  Stan State will finish off the tournament tomorrow evening at 7pm against Central Valley rival Fresno Pacific.
 
MATCH ONE:  Stan State took an 8-3 in the first set capped by an Alex Byrd block.  The Warriors increased their lead to 20-13 on a bad set by the Urban Knights.  Academy of Art cut the Stan State lead to 21-17, but back-to-back kills by Autumn Kirby and Samaya Royal gave the Warriors a 24-17 lead.  A kill by Isabella Saucedo finished off the set for the Warriors, 25-18.
 
A service ace in set two by Mariah Iosua gave the Warriors a 10-5 lead.  They increased their lead to 19-10 on another block by Alex Byrd.  The Urban Knights cut the Warrior lead to 21-16, but Stan State finished out the set taking four of the final nine points including the final two on a kill by Autumn Kirby and an ace by Kirby.
 
The guests took the next two sets 25-21 and 25-23 to tie the match at 2-2 sending it into the fifth set.  Stan State came out on fire in the final set taking seven of the first ten points to take a 7-3 lead.  Academy of Art cut the hosts' lead to 8-6, but Gabby Rawson's service ace gave Stan State a 10-6 lead.  The hosts took five of the final nine points to take the set 15-9 to take the match 3-2.
 
MATCH ONE LEADERS:  Autumn Kirby had ten kills with Mariah Iosua recording eight.  Isabella Saucedo had three service and Haley Burdo recorded two.  Gabby Rawson had 19 digs while Rein Bocage added 13 digs. Eyriana Eatmon had a team high 18 assists with Burdo adding 13.  Alex  Byrd had seven total blocks with Kirby recording five.
 
MATCH TWO:  Western New Mexico (0-2) took a 6-1 early lead in the first set.  Stan State came right back and recorded twelve of the next fifteen points to take a 13-9 lead capped by a combined block by Alex Byrd and Samaya Royal.  A kill by Emily Vander Weide capped a seven-point rally by the hosts to give them a 22-11 lead.  The Warriors closed out the set taking three of the final four points including back-to-back kills by Mariah Iosua.
 
Stan State came out on fire in the next set to take a 10-2 lead capped by an Autumn Kirby service ace.  The Warriors took a double-digit lead (19-8) and cruised to the 25-10 set two victory keyed by back-to-back service aces by Eyriana Eatmon.  
 
The Warriors scored the first five points of the third and final set capped by a block by Iosua and a kill by Vander Weide.  They increased their lead to 12-4 on a combined block by Ellison Weaver and Byrd.  Stan State took a 21-8 lead and cruised to a 25-10 lead capped by a Makenna Carrillo kill off an assist by Kendall Hughes.
 
MATCH TWO LEADERS:  Emily Vander Weide and Mariah Iosua each had a match high ten kills.  Autumn Kirby had three service aces with Alex Byrd recording four combined blocks.  Haley Burdo added 15 assists to go with Gabby Rawson's 24 digs.
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State will finish off the Stanislaus State Labor Day Volleyball Tournament tomorrow at 7pm against Central Valley rival, Fresno Pacific.
