TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State will host a pair of CCAA games this Thursday and Saturday, January 18 and 20 at The Fitz. The Warriors will face Cal Poly Pomona this Thursday with a tip-off time of 5:30pm. They will host Cal State San Bernardin this Saturday afternoon at 1pm. Thursday's game will be Stan State Student Affairs/Turlock Rotary Club Evening at The Fitz.
STAN STATE IN REVIEW: Stan State is 10-9 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA after its trip to Northern California this past weekend. The Warriors are averaging 64.3 points per game while giving up 65.4 points per game. They are being outrebounded 41.5 to 38.8. Two players are averaging double digits in scoring in
Mya Blake at 13.9 points per game and
Liliana Marques at 11.2.
Taylor Pilot leads the team with her 6.1 rebounding average, 55 assists, and 36 steals. Marques is shooting a team best 83.1% from the field.
Mya Blake leads the team with her 32 treys made while
Jadyn Patterson with her 40% shooting from three-point land.
Lyric Richardson is shooting a team leading 51% from the field.
Aunika Hornung leads the team with her 19 blocked shots.
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team. Strickland is 120-171 in his coaching stint at Stan State and the second winningest coach with his 120 victories. In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament. In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals. He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections. Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees. Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School. Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia. His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.
NOR CAL TRIP: Stan State went 0-2 on its trip to Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt. The Warriors lost 75-57 to Chico State on Jan. 11 and 61-52 to Cal Poly Humboldt.
Mya Blake lead Stan State with her 17.5 scoring average and five assists. Blake and
Jadyn Patterson each had three steals.
THREE-WAY TIE FOR FOURTH PLACE: After starting the 2023-24 undefeated in CCAA play with a 5-0 record, the Warriors dropped their first four games to begin the New Year to fall to 5-4. Stan State fell into a three-way tie for fourth place with Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly Humboldt. Cal State San Marcos currently holds the top spot at 8-1 followed by Chico State at 7-2 and Sonoma State at 6-3.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Three Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in
Taylor Pilot,
Joia Armstrong, and
Lyric Richardson. Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18. Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21. She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds. She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) in the Warriors' victory over Cal State East Bay on Nov. 30, 2022. She went five-for-ten from the field to go with her two steals and two blocked shots. Her second double-double came in Stan State's victory at CSUMB on New Year's Eve with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She was perfect from the field going five-for-five.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Stan State junior transfer
Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena. Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games. For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc. She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.
Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State. Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land. The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
NATIONAL LEADERS: As a team, the Warriors are 44
th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 33.8%. Five Warriors are shooting 34% or better from three-point land in
Kalyn Harris (42.9%),
Jadyn Patterson (40%),
Asha Walker (35.7%),
Mya Blake (35.6%), and
Liliana Marques (34.9%).
CCAA LEADERS: Stan State is third in the CCAA in blocked shots per game (3.79) and three-point field goal percentage (33.8%). The Warriors are fourth in three's made per game (6.5) and three-point field goal percentage defense (29.9%). They are fifth in field goal percentage defense (37.5%) and three-point field goal percentage defense (37.5%). Stan State is sixth in steals per game (9.36) and scoring defense (65.4).
Mya Blake is tied for third in steals (33), tied for fifth in treys made (32), tied for sixth in treys made per game (1.9), and ninth in scoring (13.3), field goal percentage (40.2%), and steals per game (1.9).
Taylor Pilot is second in steals (35), third in steals per game (2.3), fourth in assists (55), sixth in assists per game (3.4), and seventh in assist/turnover ratio (+1.2).
Liliana Marques is eighth in treys made (30) and tenth in treys made per game (1.7).
Joia Armstrong is fourth in blocked shots per game (1.0) and
Jadyn Patterson is tied for ninth with her 28 treys made.
BRONCOS IN REVIEW: Cal Poly Pomona is 9-5 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA after going 0-2 at home against Sonoma State (58-61) and Cal State San Marcos (45-63). The Broncos have won four of their last six games. They are averaging 70.7 points per game while giving up 59.4 points per game. Pomona is outrebounding their opponents 40.1 to 37.9. Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Kalaya Buggs (12.9 ppg), Jeanette Fine (12.4 ppg), Sydney Nelson (12.3 ppg), and Breanne Ha (10.9 ppg). Nelson leads the team with her 6.6 rebounding average while Mydrea Moore has blocked a team high 16 shots. Buggs leads the team with her 29 steals, 59 assists, and 83.8% shooting from the line. Fine is shooting a team high 45% from the field. Ha leads the team with her 32 treys and 35.2% shooting from the three-point land.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Cal Poly Pomona leads the all-time series with the Warriors 23-7. The Broncos are 7-3 in the last ten meetings including winning both games last season. They won 70-69 in Turlock on Jan. 14, 2023.
Joia Armstrong had ten points for the Warriors. Pomona won 78-52 in Pomona on Feb. 23, 2023. The last Stan State victory over the Broncos was a 59-58 victory in Pomona on Dec. 2, 2021, behind
Da'Myiah Lewis' 20 points and
Kyanna Davis' 17 points. Stan State last won in Turlock, 72-65, on Nov. 18, 2017.
COYOTES IN REVIEW: Cal State San Bernardino is 6-8 overall and 4-5 in the CCAA. CSUSB is 2-4 in its last six games including losing both games last week at home to Cal State San Marcos (41-75) and Sonoma State (63-65). The Coyotes are averaging 63.5 points per game while giving up 66.4 points per game. They are being outrebounded 41.4 to 39.9. Destiny Jackson leads the way with her 15.6 scoring average and 31 steals. Mia Dufresne leads the team with her 21 blocked shots and 7.1 rebounding average. Deja Blue has dished out a team leading 42 assists. Auren Jackson leads CSUSB with her 16 treys made, 29.6% shooting from beyond the arc, and 76.2% shooting from the line.
ALL-TIME SERIES: CSUSB the all-time series 19-12 with the Warriors winning five of the last seven meetings. CSUSB won 62-59 in Turlock on Jan. 12, 2023.
Jadyn Patterson had 16 points and
Alexis Woodson chipped in 13 points. Stan State defeated the Coyotes 64-63 in San Bernardino on Feb. 25, 2023.
Ashmeen Sran had 14 points for the Warriors. The last Stan State win in Turlock was on Feb. 6, 2020, 78-57, behind
