Women’s Basketball Travels to the Bay Area for a Pair of CCAA Games

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State will begin the second half of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this Thursday and Saturday, January 25 and 27 in the Bay Area for a pair of games.  The Warriors will be in San Francisco this Thursday to face San Francisco State. They will be in Hayward on Saturday night to face Cal State East Bay. Both games have 5:30-p.m. scheduled tip-off times.  
 
STAN STATE IN REVIEW:  Stan State is 11-10 overall and 6-5 in the CCAA.  The Warriors are averaging 65.0 points per game while giving up 66.6 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 41.1 to 39.4.  Mya Blake leads the team with her 14.5 scoring average followed by Liliana Marques' 10.2 scoring average.  Blake leads the team with her 37 treys made with Marques leading the team with her 83.1% shooting from the line.  Taylor Pilot is averaging a team high 5.8 rebounds per game to go with her team leading 64 assists and 40 steals.  Jadyn Patterson is shooting a team best 40.8% from beyond the arc.  Lyric Richardson leads the team with her 50.9% shooting from the field and Aunika Hornung has blocked a team high 20 shots.  
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team.  Strickland is 121-172 in his coaching stint at Stan State and the second winningest coach with his 120 victories. In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament.  In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals.  He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections.  Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees.  Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School.  Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia.  His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.

HOME STAND:  The Warriors went 1-1 on their two game homestand last weekend.  They lost 94-70 to Cal Poly Pomona Thursday evening and defeated Cal State San Bernardino 74-63 on Saturday.  Stan State averaged 72.0 points per game and gave up 78.5 points per game.  The Warriors outrebounded their two opponents 45.0 to 37.5.  Mya Blake led the team with her 19.0 scoring average and six steals.  Asha Walker averaged 12.0 points per game and tied with Blake each with five treys made.  Walker and Jadyn Patterson each connected on a team high 50% of their attempts from beyond the arc.  Talia Maxwell averaged 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.  Aunika Hornung shot 54.5%  from the field and Taylor Pilot had a team leading nine assists.  Pilot shot a team best 80% from the line.   
 
THREE-WAY TIE FOR FOURTH PLACE:  Stan State is in a three-way tie for fourth place with Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The Warriors are one game out of second place which is held by Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona.  Cal State San Marcos holds the top spot at 10-1.  
 
 DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Four Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in Taylor Pilot, Joia Armstrong, Lyric Richardson, and Talia Maxwell.   Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18.  Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21.  She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds.  She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) in the Warriors' victory over Cal State East Bay on Nov. 30, 2022.  She went five-for-ten from the field to go with her two steals and two blocked shots.  Her second double-double came in Stan State's victory at CSUMB on New Year's Eve with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  She was perfect from the field going five-for-five.  Maxwell recorded her first collegiate double-double in the Warriors' victory over CSU San Bernardino on Jan. 20 with 15 points and 13 rebounds. 
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:  Stan State junior transfer Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.  She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games.  For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.  She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.  Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land.  The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.  
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  As a team, Stan State is 40th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage with a 34.3%.    
 
CCAA LEADERS:  Stan State is second in the CCAA in blocked shots (3.71), third in three-point field goal percentage (34.3%) and offensive rebounds per game (14.2).  The Warriors are tied for fifth in treys made per game (6.5) and sixth in rebounding (39.4) and field goal percentage defense (38.7%).  
 
Mya Blake is fourth in steals (39), fourth in steals per game (2.1), sixth in treys made (39), sixth in treys made per game (1.9), and eighth in scoring (14.5 scoring average).  Taylor Pilot is second in steals (40), tied for third in assist/turnover ratio (+1.3), third in steals per game (2.2), fifth in assists (64), and fifth in assists per game (3.6).  
 
Aunika Hornung is third in blocked shots (20) and blocked shots per game (1.3).  Joia Armstrong is tied for seventh in blocked shots per game (1.0) while Jadyn Patterson is eighth with 31 treys made and Liliana Marques is ninth with 30 treys made.  
 
GATORS IN REVIEW:  San Francisco State is 4-12 overall record and a 3-8 CCAA record.  The Gators snapped their five-game losing streak with a 68-57 victory at Sonoma State on Saturday.  They are averaging  61.7 points per game while giving up 72 points per game. Alexsandra Alvarado leads the team with her 16.5 scoring average, 75.95% shooting from the line, 48 assists, 29 steals, and 23 treys made.  Sage Bridges-Bey is averaging 12.2 points per game and a team high 5.7 rebounds per game.  Kierra Johnston has blocked a team high 17 shots.  
 
LAST TIME:  Stan State defeated SF State 77-72 in Turlock on Dec. 2, 2023.  The Warriors outrebounded the Gators 47-28.  The trio of Alexis Woodson, Liliana Marques, and Jadyn Patterson combined for 39 points to lead the way for Stan State.  The Warriors forced 17 turnovers by the Gators including ten by steals (Pilot and Hornung each with three).  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series with the Gators 26-21 since 1998.  
 
PIONEERS IN REVIEW:  Cal State East Bay is 7-11 overall and 5-6 in the CCAA after going 3-3 in its last six games.  The Pioneers went 1-1 last week on the road with a 57-56 victory over Sonoma State and a 78-65 loss to Cal State San Marcos.  They are averaging 65 points per game while giving up 70.8 points per game.  CSUEB is outrebounding its opponents 40.3 to 38.3.  Payton Sterk leads the way with her 18.0 scoring, 50 treys, 44 assists, and 82.5% shooting from the line.  Jaela Richardson has blocked a team high 21 shots and is averaging 11.7 points per game.  She is shooting a team high 44.7% from the field.  Camryn Richardson leads the Pioneers with her 27 steals.  
 
LAST TIME:  The Warriors defeated the Pioneers 69-46 as they held CSUEB to 27% shooting from the field including just 12% from three-point range.  Lyric Richardson had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Taylor Pilot added 13 points and Aunika Hornung chipped in 10 points.  Stan  State forced 26 turnovers by the Pioneers with 14 coming from steals (four by Pilot and two each by Richardson, Hornung, Jadyn Patterson, and Kalyn Harris).  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State East Bay leads the all-time series with the Warriors 17-7 since 2010.  The Warriors have won three of the last four games including the one on Nov. 30, 2023, in Turlock.
