Warriors Return Home to The Fitz to Face Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills

TURLOCK, Calif.--- After splitting their two games in the Bay Area this weekend, Stan State will return to The Fitz to host Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills this Thursday and Saturday, February 1 and 3.  The Warriors will face Cal State Los Angeles this Thursday at 5:30pm and Cal State Dominguez Hills this Saturday at 1pm. 
 
STAN STATE IN REVIEW:  Warriors enter Thursday's contest with Cal State Los Angeles with a 12-11 overall record and a 7-6 CCAA record.  They are averaging 64.8 points per game while giving up 65.3 points per game.  Stan State is being outrebounded 40.3 to 40.2.  Mya Blake leads the Warriors with her 14.7 scoring average, 40 treys made, and 49 steals.  Liliana Marques is shooting a team high 82% from the line while Asha Walker is shooting a team leading 40% from three-point territory. Leading the way with her 40% shooting from three-point range is Asha Walker.  Taylor Pilot leads Stan State with her 66 assists while Aunika Hornung has blocked a team high 23 shots.   
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team.  Strickland is 122-173 in his coaching stint at Stan State and the second winningest coach with his 120 victories. In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament.  In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals.  He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections.  Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees.  Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School.  Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia.  His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.

BAY AREA TRIP:  Stan State went 1-1 last weekend in the Bay Area.  The Warriors defeated SF State 55-30 Thursday and lost to Cal State East Bay 72-70 in overtime.  Mya Blake averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in the two games.  Asha Walker averaged 15.0 points per game and shot 42.9% from three-point range.  Talia Maxwell averaged 10.0 points per game and shot 46.2% from the field.  Stan State forced 36 turnovers in the two games and recorded 30 steals. 
 
IN A TIE FOR FOURTH PLACE:  Stan State is in a tie for fourth place with Cal State East Bay each with a 7-6 CCAA record.  Cal State San Marcos holds the top spot with a 11-2 CCAA.  Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State are tied for second each at 9-4.  The Warriors are one game ahead of Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal Poly Humboldt, and Cal State San Bernardino who are tied for sixth place.  
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Four Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in Taylor Pilot, Joia Armstrong, Lyric Richardson, and Talia Maxwell.   Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18.  Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21.  She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds.  She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) in the Warriors' victory over Cal State East Bay on Nov. 30, 2022.  She went five-for-ten from the field to go with her two steals and two blocked shots.  Her second double-double came in Stan State's victory at CSUMB on New Year's Eve with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  She was perfect from the field going five-for-five.  Maxwell recorded her first collegiate double-double in the Warriors' victory over CSU San Bernardino on Jan. 20 with 15 points and 13 rebounds. 
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:  Stan State junior transfer Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.  She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games.  For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.  She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.  Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land.  The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.  
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  Mya Blake is 31st in the nation with her 49 steals and Taylor Pilot is 51st with her 45 steals.  
 
CCAA LEADERS:  Stan State is second in the CCAA in blocked shots per game (3.65) and third in offensive rebounding (14.7).  The Warriors are fourth in steals (9.87), three-point field goal percentage (33.5%), three-point field goal percentage defense (29.9%), and rebounding (40.2).  They are tied for fifth in field goal percentage defense (38.4%) and fifth in scoring defense (65.3 ppg).  
 
Mya Blake is second in steals (49), tied for second (2.3), sixth in three-point field goals made (40), seventh in three-point field goals per game (1.9), eighth in scoring (14.7 ppg), and ninth in free throw percentage (75.6%).  Taylor Pilot is tied for second in steals per game (2.3), third in steals (45), fifth in assists (66), sixth in assists per game (3.3) and assist/turnover ratio (+1.2).  Aunika Hornung is third in blocked shots (23) and blocked shots per game (1.3).  Joia Armstrong is seventh in blocked shots (19) and eighth in blocked shots per game (0.8).  Jadyn Patterson is ninth with her 31 treys made.  
 
GOLDEN EAGLES IN REVIEW:  Cal State Los Angeles is 9-9 overall and 6-7 in the CCAA after winning four of its five last games.  The Golden Eagles went 1-1 last week with a 62-51 victory at Cal State San Bernardino and a 79-76 loss at Cal Poly Pomona.  Nicole Flennaugh and Lily Buggs are averaging 12.3 points per game.  Buggs is averaging a team leading 8.5 rebounds per game.  Flennaugh leads the team with her 33 steals, 60 assists, and 41 treys. Donja Payne has blocked a team high 15 shots. Gabirella Rones leads the team with her 46.9% shooting from three-point land and Alicia Jones is shooting a team high 47% from the field.  
 
LAST TIME:  Stan State defeated Cal State Los Angeles 62-61 in Los Angeles on Dec. 9, 2023.  Mya Blake paced the Warriors with 18 points followed by Liliana Marques with 16.  Amaya Fuentes paced CSULA with 17 points.  Marques hit the game-winning trey with a minute to go off an assist from Taylor Pilot.  Cal State Los Angeles had a chance to win the game, but the Golden Eagles missed both free throws with a second to go on the clock.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  The all-time series is tied at 15-15 with the Golden Eagles winning five of the last six meetings.  The last Warrior victory in Turlock was on Feb. 28, 2019, a 66-54 win behind Kyanna Davis' 19 points.  
 
TOROS IN REVIEW:  Cal State Dominguez Hills is 9-10 overall and 6-7 in the CCAA and have won four of its last six games.  The Toros lost both games last week 80-70 at Cal Poly Pomona and 74-61 at Cal State San Bernardino.  They are averaging 69.8 points per game while giving up 68.4 points per game.  CSUDH is outrebounding its opponents 43.7 to 37.  Nola Williams is averaging 17.0 points per game followed by Asia Jordan's 14.1 average.  Jordan is averaging a team leading 10.9 rebounds per game to go with her 49% shooting from the field.  Williams has made a team high 24 treys and leads the team with her 44 steals.  Malia Goldsmith has dished out a team high 49 assists.    
 
LAST TIME:  Stan State defeated the Toros in Carson 65-59 on Dec. 7, 2023.  Mya Blake paced the Warriors with 14 points followed by  Aunika Hornung's 11 points and Jadyn Patterson's 10 points.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  CSUDH leads the all-time series 16-11 with the Toros winning four of the last five meetings.  The last Stan State victory in Turlock was on Nov. 23, 2019, an 85-67 victory.
