No. 20 CSUMB Hold Off Warriors’ Late Inning Rally in Night Cap to Sweep Doubleheader

SEASIDE, Calif.---  Stan State's saw its late inning rally fall short in the night cap of today's doubleheader in Seaside, Calif., with the No. 20 Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (16-7, 12-3 CCAA).  The Otters took both ends of the doubleheader 12-1 and 10-6 at the Otter Sports Complex.
 
GAME ONE:  For the second straight game, Cal State Monterey Bay took an early lead.  This time the Otters scored eight runs in the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead.  They added another run in their half of the fifth to take a 9-0 lead.  
 
Stan State cut the deficit to 9-1 with a run in its half of the sixth inning.  Alex Solis had a lead-off double and scored on a ground out by Tyler Van Dyk.  The Otters had three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final 12-1.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS:  Alex Solis had both Warriors' hits including a double while scoring a run.  
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Trent Huff suffered the Stan State loss in the start for the guests.  Greysen Gregory, LaKeal Morris, and Josh Ochoa combined to pitch five innings of relief, giving up three hits and four runs while striking out seven and walking seven.
 
GAME TWO:  Stan State (8-13-1, 4-9 CCAA) took an early 1-0 lead on a one-out solo home run by Luke Davies in the top of the first inning of the night cap.  The Otters came back and took a 2-1 lead on a two-run home run by Brady Miguel in the bottom of the first.  They added two more runs in their half of the first on a two-run two-out home run by Nico Hartojo.  
 
The Warriors came back with a two-run second to cut the Otter lead to 4-3.  Chris Catalano had a lead-off walk went to second on a Jerry Nix single.  They scored on a one-out double by Jackson Brooks.  
 
CSUMB increased its lead to 6-3 with a two-run second inning of its own.  The Otters added four more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 10-3 lead.  Dominic Felice's two-run single was the big hit for the Otters in their half of the third. 
 
Stan State made it interesting in the final innings of the seven-inning night cap.  Nix had a one-out double.  He went to third on a wild pitch.  Flavio Perez walked to place runners on the corners.  Brooks singled home Nix to cut the deficit to 10-4.  Perez and Brooks advanced a base on a wild pitch and scored on a two-run single by Jacob Baker to cut the Otter lead to 10-6.  Robert Valdivia singled to place runners on first and second, but the Otters relievers induced the last two batters of the innings to strike out and fly out to center field and preserve the CSUMB 10-6 lead.
 
In the Warrior seventh, Catalano had a one-out double.   With two outs, Perez and Brooks drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.  The Otters struck out the final Warrior batter as they took the night cap 10-6.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS:  Four Warriors had two hits apiece in Robert Valdivia, Chris Catalano, jerry Nix, and Jackson Brooks.  Brooks drove in three runs and Nix scored twice. Luke Davies had a solo home run while Catalano, Nix, Brooks, and Flavio Perez each had a double.
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Tony Jacob (1-4) suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors.  Noah Chelberg and Caleb Bertoncini combined to pitch four innings of relief, giving up four hits and a run while striking out three and walking one.
 
UP NEXT:  The Warriors will conclude this weekend's four-game series with the No. 20 Cal State Monterey Bay Otters tomorrow afternoon with a noon starting game.  Stan State returns home to Warrior Field, March 22-24, for a four-game series with Cal State East Bay.
