SEASIDE, Calif.--- For the second straight game, the visiting Stan State Warriors saw their late inning rally fall short this afternoon in a 11-9 loss in the series finale at No. 20 Cal State Monterey Bay. Four Warriors had multiple-hit games in
Chris Catalano (four-for-five),
Tyler Van Dyk (three-for-three),
Robert Valdivia (two-for-five) and
Mac Cabero (two-for-four). Valdivia and Van Dyk combined to drive in five runs while Catalano scored three runs.
Stan State (8-14-1, 4-10 CCAA) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Robert Valdivia had a lead-off single, went to second on a
Flavio Perez ground out to second base. He stole third and scored on a two-out double to center field by
Chris Catalano.
The 20
th ranked Otters tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Brady Miguel drew a two-out walk and scored on a single by KW Quilici to tie the game at 1-1.
The Warriors retook the lead with a two-run second inning.
Tyler Van Dyk had a lead-off single. He went to second when
Jacob Baker reached on an Otter error with two outs. Both Van Dyk and Baker scored on a two-out two-run double by Valdivia to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead.
Cal State Monterey Bay (17-7, 13-3 CCAA) tied the game with a two-run third inning. Jaden Sheppard had a lead-off home run to cut the Warriors' lead to 3-2. Sergio Solis singled to follow Sheppard's home run. He went to third on a one-out single by Chase Lindemann' single through the right side. He scored on a two-out single by Miguel to tie the game at 3-3.
Once again, the Warriors retook the lead this time with a run in the top of the fourth inning.
Mac Cabero had a lead-off triple and scored on a ground out by Valdivia to give Stan State the 4-3 lead. The visitors doubled their lead in the fifth inning. Catalano had a one-out single and scored on a two-out double to right center by Van Dyk.
The Otters took a 9-5 lead with a six-run fifth inning capped by a two-out two-run triple by Quilici. The score remained 9-5 CSUMB until the Warrior half of the seventh inning. Catalano had a lead-off double and scored on a one-out Van Dyk single up the middle to cut the deficit to 9-6.
CSUMB added two insurance runs in the seventh inning on a two-out two-run double by Nico Hartojo in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 11-6 lead.
The score remained 11-6 Otters until the top of the ninth inning. Catalano had a one-out single and went to second when
Jonluke Goldman drew a walk. Still with one out, Van Dyk was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Catalano scored when
Jerry Nix reached on a fielder's choice which Van Dyk was out at second base. The Warriors cut the deficit to 11-8 when
Mac Cabero drove in Goldman with a single through the right side. With two outs,
Jackson Brooks single home Nix to make it 11-9 Otters. Valdivia drew a bases loaded walk. Christian McInerney induced the final Warrior to fly out to center to end the Stan State scoring threat and preserve the 11-9 CSUMB victory for his first save of the season.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State pounded out 15 hits in the afternoon.
Chris Catalano was four-for-five with a run batted in, three runs scored, and two doubles along with a stolen base.
Tyler Van Dyk was three-for-three with two runs batted in, a run scored, a stolen base, and a double.
Robert Valdivia went two-for-five with three runs batted in, a run scored, a stolen base, and a double.
Mac Cabero went two-for-four with a run batted in and a run scored.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Kody Cardoza pitched two innings of relief, giving up two hits and an unearned run while walking one.
Caleb Bertoncini pitched two innings of relief, giving up three hits and two unearned runs while striking out one.
Austin Balentine (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season in the start.
UP NEXT: Stan State returns home to Warrior Field, March 22-24, for a four-game series with Cal State East Bay. The series will begin with a 6:00 p.m. starting single game on Friday, March 22. The two teams will play a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 23. The series finale is set for Sunday, March 25 at noon.
