TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State split its doubleheader this afternoon with the first place Cal State San Marcos at Warrior Field. The Warriors took game one 5-1 and lost the night cap 4-3. The two teams will close out the four-game series on Sunday, April 28 with an 11:00 a.m. starting doubleheader. Prior to the game, Stan State will recognize its seven seniors at 10:40 a.m.
GAME ONE: Stan State (16-22-1, 12-21 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead after a three-run first inning.
Robert Valdivia had a lead-off single and went to second when
Alex Solis walked. Still with no outs,
JD Madrigal reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Valdivia and Solis scored on a two-run double by
Kyle Rachels. Madrigal scored on a sacrifice fly by
Chris Catalano.
The Warriors added an insurance run in the third to take a 4-0 lead. In the eighth inning, Stan State took a 5-0 lead. With two outs, Catalano and
Flavio Perez had back-to-back two-out singles. They each stole a base and Catalano scored on a single by
Jerry Nix.
The Cougars cut the Warrior lead to 5-1 in the night, but
Caleb Bertoncini (2-0) retired the last batter on a ground out to Rachels at first to preserve the 5-1 Warrior victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Kyle Rachels had two of the Warriors' seven hits with two runs batted in on a double. Five other Warriors had one hit apiece in
Robert Valdivia,
JD Madrigal,
Chris Catalano, and
Jerry Nix.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Caleb Bertoncini pitched a six-hit complete game victory. He gave up one run and walked one.
GAME TWO: For the first time in three games, Cal State San Marcos (26-17, 25-13 CCAA) took the early lead. Phoenix Sommay walked to lead-off the game. He went to second on a failed picked off attempt and scored on a single by Garrett Teunissen.
The Cougars doubled their led in the second to take a 2-0 lead. They added an insurance run in the fourth. Sean McGrew drew a one-out walk and went to second on a single by Ruben Cedillo. He scored on a double by Emilio Luna. The guests added another run in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.
Stan State made it interesting in the sixth.
Alex Solis had a lead-off infield single. He advanced to second on a single by
Kyle Rachels. They scored on a two-run single by
Chris Catalano to cut the deficit to 4-2. Catalano scored when
Luke Davies reached on a Cougar error.
Cougar reliever, Preston Kelly, retired the Warriors in order to take the doubleheader split.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Chris Catalano had two hits with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Kyle Rachels had two hits and scored a run.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Tony Jacob (2-5) suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors.
Patrick Sweeney pitched 3.2 relief innings, giving up two hits and a run while striking out two.
