Broncos Take Two First Games of Weekend Four-Game Series with Stan State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  In two close games, it was the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (17-13, 13-9 CCAA) taking the first two games of this weekend's four-game series with the Stan State Warriors 5-4 and 6-4 this afternoon at Warrior Field.  The two teams will finish off the four-game series tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader at Stan State.

GAME ONE:  Cal Poly Pomona took an early 3-0 lead in its half of the first inning to begin the doubleheader.  Johnny Pappas walked and advanced to second on a single up the middle by Jack Sanders.  Anthony Gibbons reached on a Warrior error to load the bases.  With one out, Tyler Chaffeee was hit by a pitch to bring in Pappas with the game's first run.   Sanders scored on a sacrifice fly by Marco Malerba.  The visitors took a 3-0 lead on a two-out single by Jack Lugo.

The game remained 3-0 Broncos until the bottom of the fourth inning.  Kyle Rachels had a lead-off single and scored on an Alex Solis double.  Solis scored on a Bronco wild pitch to cut the Bronco lead to 3-2. 

The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.  With two outs, Danny Murphy walked and scored on a Jacob Baker triple to tie the game at 3-3. 
Cal Poly Pomona retook the lead with a two-run ninth inning, 5-3. 

In bottom of the ninth, Tyler Van Dyk drew a lead-off walk and was pinch ran by Mac Cabero who went to second when JD Madrigal walked.  Madrigal was pinch ran for by Jackson Brooks.  Pinch hitter
Jonluke Goldman reached on a Bronco error to load the bases.  Cabero scored when the Bronco reliever, Chris Field induced the next Warrior to ground out to a double play.  With two outs, Baker walked and stole second but Field induced the final Warrior to ground out to preserve the 5-4 Bronco victory.

STAN STATE HITTERS: Jacob Baker had two of the Warriors' six hits including a triple.  Alexis Solis added a double for the hosts. 

WARRIOR PITCHERS:  Kody Cardoza suffered the loss in relief to fall to 3-2.  Caleb Bertoncini pitched 5.1 innings in the start, giving up seven hits, three runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking one.  Noah Chelberg pitched one inning, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out two and walking one.

GAME TWO:  Once again, Cal Poly Pomona took an early lead this time a 2-0 lead in the second inning.  Tyler Chaffey walked and went to third on a one-out double by Nick Lugo.  Chaffey scored on a sacrifice fly by Brent Cota.  The Broncos made it 2-0 on a two-out single by Johnny Pappas.

Stan State (13-19-1, 8-13 CCAA) cut the deficit in half in its half of the fourth inning.  Alex Solis had a lead-off single and went to third on a Tyler Van Dyk double.  He scored on a JD Madrigal sacrifice fly.  The Warriors tied the game in the fifth.  Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch to begin the inning.  He went to second on a Ryan Leonesio sacrifice bunt.  Baker scored on Robert Valdivia triple to tie the game at 2-2.

Cal Poly Pomona retook the lead, 4-2, on a two-run home run by Anthony Gibbons in the seventh inning.  Stan State once again came back and cut the lead in half, 4-3 in its half of the seventh.  Leonesio had a two-out single and scored on a Kyle Rachels run scoring single. 

The Warriors tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth.  Tyler Van Dyk reached on an error to begin the inning and was pinch ran for by Jackson Brooks.  Madrigal sacrificed him to second.  With two outs, Brooks scored when Jonluke Goldman reached on a Bronco error.
 
The Broncos took a 6-4 lead with two-run ninth. Stan State had a chance to tie the game at 6-6 in its half of the ninth.  Rachels drew a two-out walk, but Giancarlo Flores (1-0) induced the next Warrior to fly out to left to preserve the 6-4 Bronco victory.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Kyle Rachels had two of the Warriors' six hits while Tyler Van Dyk had a double and Robert Valdivia a triple.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Tony Jacob recorded the no-decision in the start.  Quinn Oliver suffered the loss in relief falling to 1-1.  Damian Vallejos and Noah Chelberg pitched a combined two innings, giving up no runs and no hits while striking out two and walking two. 

UP NEXT: The two teams will finish off the four-game series tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader.
