LOS ANGELES, Calif.--- After taking game one 19-5 last night, Stan State split today's doubleheader with Cal State L.A. losing game one 20-8 and taking the night cap 8-3. The two teams will finish off the four-game series tomorrow, May 4 with a noon starting series finale at Cal State L.A.'s Reeder Field.
GAME ONE:Â Stan State took a 2-0 lead in game two of this weekend's four-game series with a two-run first inning.
Robert Valdivia drew a lead-off walk and went to third on a single by
Kyle Rachels. With one out, Valdivia scored on a wild pitch and Rachels went to third.Â
Chris Catalano drew a one-out walk and stole second which Rachels scored to double the Warriors' lead to 2-0.
Cal State L.A. (23-26, 17-22 CCAA) tied the game at 2-2 on a one-out two-run single by Cesar Chavez in the bottom of the second inning. The Golden Eagles doubled their lead on a two-run one-out home run by Malik Clayton.Â
Stan State tied the game on a two-run two-out home run by
JD Madrigal in the fifth inning. The Golden Eagles broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning to take a 10-4 lead.Â
The Warriors came right back with a four-run sixth inning to cut the deficit to 10-8 in the sixth.Â
Alex Solis,
Jerry Nix, and
Jacob Baker drew walks to load the bases to begin the inning. With one out, Valdivia had a two-run double to bring in Solis and nix. Rachels drew in Baker with a single to right center. Then with two outs, Valdivia scored on passed ball.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs on a two-out single by Art Ruiz to take a 12-8 lead. They added four more runs in the seventh and four in the eight to take the 20-8 game two victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS:Â The trio of
Robert Valdivia,
Kyle Rachels, and
JD Madrigal combined to go six-for-14 with five runs batted in and five runs scored to lead the Warrior hitters. Madrigal had a two-run home run.
STAN STATE PITCHERS:Â Caleb Bertoncini (2-1) suffeed the loss in the start.Â
Josh Ochoa pitched 0.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit. Also pitching for the guests were
Patrick Sweeney and
LaKeal Morris.
GAME TWO: The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Matthew Piortrowski had a two-out triple and scored on a Warrior error. Stan State (18-27-1, 14-23 CCAA) tied the game in the top of the second. Chis Catalano had a lead-off single, went to second when
Flavio Perez reached on a hit batsman.Â
Danny Murphy reached on a Cal State L.A. error which loaded the bases. With one out, Catalano scored on a successful squeeze play by
Ryan Leonesio.
Flavio Perez's two-out three-run home run gave the Warriors a 4-1 lead in the third inning.Â
Kyle Rachels had a lead-off single. He went to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Rachels went to third on an infield single by Catalano. They both scored on a home run by Perez.
The Golden Eagles cut the Warrior lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the third.Â
The game remained 4-2 Stan State until the top of the seventh. Rachels had a lead-off home run.
JD Madrigal had a one-out single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Alex Solis. With two outs, Perez was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. Madrigal stole third and scored on a single by Murphy.Â
Jacob Bakers drew a walk to load the bases. Perez scored when Leonesio reached on a Golden Eagle error to give Stan State an 8-2 lead.
Cal State L.A. scored a run in the seventh, but that is the closes the hosts would get as the Warriors took the night cap 8-3.

Danny Murphy went six-for-11, scoring five runs and driving in six. Rachels and
Flavio Perez each had home runs.Â
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Tony Jacob (3-5) picked up the win in the start. The senior lefty went six innings, giving up eight hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking four.Â
Quinn Oliver pitched a scoreless ninth while giving op no hits.Â
