SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – Stan State women's tennis opened the SJSU Hidden Duals on Friday at the Spartan Tennis Complex, facing a challenging first day of singles and doubles competition against Santa Clara and host San José State.
The Warriors began the three-day tournament with six singles matches against Santa Clara before transitioning into three doubles contests against San José State. Both Division I programs controlled their respective sessions, but the opening day provided Stan State with valuable experience against unfamiliar opponents as the team continues its fall schedule.
Sophomore Alessandra Del Pino Carvajal delivered the Warriors' most competitive singles set of the afternoon, while senior Abbigail Mulick and sophomore Lisa Lieberman collected three games in their doubles matchup against the Spartans.
Day One Singles Recap
Stan State opened Friday against Santa Clara, a West Coast Conference program coming off a productive showing at its own Hidden Duals in late October.
Del Pino Carvajal provided one of the Warriors' strongest stretches of the opening session against Santa Clara's Sonja Hadjipavlou. The sophomore pushed the opening set to 7-5 before Hadjipavlou secured the second 6-0 to take the match.
Mulick faced Santa Clara's Ashley Katz, who entered the weekend following several notable performances at the Broncos' home tournament. Katz earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while Katrine Damkjær fell 6-3, 6-1 to Anna Rahman.
Lieberman faced Lara Quaglia, who earned a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Junior Nica Sobrapena dropped a 6-3, 6-0 result to Juliette Krumholz, while Emi Mikami fell 6-1, 6-1 against Madhu Satishbabu.
The opening session presented a challenging test for a Stan State team that entered the weekend following competition at the ITA West Regional Championships in Fresno. The Warriors faced a Santa Clara lineup featuring several players who had collected singles victories against Division I opponents during the previous month.
Day One Doubles Recap
Stan State returned to the courts for doubles competition against San José State, taking on three Spartan pairings.
Mulick and Lieberman competed against Emilija Pranyte and Nitika Girish, falling 6-3 in the closest of the Warriors' three doubles matches.
Damkjær and Sobrapena faced Soledad Capilla and Cristina Losada, who earned a 6-0 victory. Del Pino Carvajal and Mikami also competed together, falling 6-0 to Emma Fantousis and Camila Celis.
The doubles session provided Stan State with another opportunity to evaluate its combinations against Division I competition. With a six-player roster featuring four returners and two transfers, the Warriors continue developing partnerships ahead of the spring dual-match season.
Warriors Update
Friday's competition marked another step in Stan State's fall development as the Warriors faced opponents from two Division I conferences.
The team entered the weekend after collecting four opening-round singles victories and a doubles win at the ITA West Regional Championships in October. Mikami, Sobrapena, Damkjær and Mulick each advanced through the opening round of singles competition in Fresno, while Mulick and Sobrapena earned a doubles victory over Westmont.
The SJSU Hidden Duals present a different challenge, with Stan State competing against programs outside its regular PacWest schedule.
Friday's results highlighted the level of competition awaiting the Warriors throughout the weekend, while providing opportunities to adjust to different playing styles and gain additional experience in singles and doubles.

Host San José State also competed against Nevada in singles Friday, earning four victories in six matches.
Emma Fantousis defeated Defne Aydemir 6-2, 7-6, while Soledad Capilla earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Kennedy Robinson. Cristina Losada and Katarina Brajovic added straight-set victories for the Spartans.
