Owen Bascom Moves into Top 15 as Stan State Wraps Day Two at CCAA Championships

STOCKTON, Calif. —Battling through inclement weather and a 4.5-hour delay, the Stan State men's golf team shaved 10 strokes off its opening round to post a 295 (+7) on Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park (Par 72) in Stockton, Calif., behind a second-round 73 (+1) from Owen Bascom.

The Warriors sit seventh overall at 600 (+24) through two rounds heading into Wednesday's final round.

Stan State is competing in a field loaded with regionally and nationally ranked programs. According to the latest NCAA Division II West Region rankings, Cal State East Bay is ranked No. 2, CSU San Bernardino No. 4, Chico State No. 5, and Cal State San Marcos No. 7, while CSU Monterey Bay is No. 8. Nationally, Chico State is ranked No. 26, Cal State East Bay No. 30, CSU San Bernardino No. 31, and CSU Monterey Bay No. 49.

CSU San Bernardino continues to lead the tournament at 574 (-2) after rounds of 282 (-6) and 292 (+4), followed by Chico State at 577 (+1) (289, 288) and Cal State San Marcos at 578 (+2) (288, 290). CSU East Bay is fourth at 584
(+8) (295, 289), CSU Dominguez Hills fifth at 588 (+12) (289, 299), CSU Monterey Bay sixth at 599 (+23) (296, 303), and Stan State seventh at 600 (+24) (305, 295).

Bascom led the way for the Warriors and is tied for 15th overall at 148 (+4) after rounds of 75 (+3) and 73 (+1). Riley Kirk moved into a tie for 20th at 149 (+5) (76, 73), while Carson Diaz is tied for 22nd at 150 (+6) (77, 73).  Chase Bird sits tied for 29th at 153 (+9) after rounds of 77 (+5) and 76 (+4), and Ricky Sullivan stands at 77 after his opening round.

Individually, CSU San Bernardino's Aaron Parayno and Cal State San Marcos' Gavin McCormick are tied for the lead at 140 (-4) after rounds of 71-69 and 68-72, respectively. CSUSM's Kai Miyata is third at 142 (-2) (71, 71), while Chico State's Giuseppe Aliotti sits fourth at 143 (-1) (74, 69). The top five individuals will earn All-Tournament honors, with Bascom sitting four strokes out of that position heading into the final round.

Stan State will be paired with CSU Monterey Bay and CSU Dominguez Hills for Wednesday's final round. Jesse Verheul will tee off at 8:00 a.m., followed by Chase Bird at 8:11 a.m., Carson Diaz at 8:22 a.m., Riley Kirk at 8:33 a.m., and Owen Bascom at 8:44 a.m.

The top 10 teams from both the West and South Central regions will advance to the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional, with selections announced April 25 on NCAA.com. The regional is scheduled for May seven through nine at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif., followed by the NCAA Division II National Championships May 18 through 22 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
