TURLOCK -- New Warrior men's soccer head coach Ahmad Tousi can breathe a sigh of relief now that his team has earned their first victory of the season, a 3-0 shutout versus Menlo College Sunday at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex, Tousi's first at the helm of the program.
The win keeps the Warriors unbeaten so far in the early-goings of the 2008 campaign with a 1-0-1 record. Menlo College falls to 1-2-0 overall. The Warriors will head to Belmont Tuesday to take on Notre Dame de Namur in their final non-conference tune-up before coming home Sunday to play California Collegiate Athletic Association-favorite Sonoma State at 11:30 a.m.
The scoring on the day was a mix of young and old, as two freshmen hooked up for the Warriors' first goal in the ninth minute, and two senior captains each put the ball in the net in the second half for the final score.
Francisco Soto fed a pass to
Andrew Ruiz, who beat one defender inside the penalty box and buried the ball into the upper right corner to give Cal State Stanislaus all they would need with a 1-0 lead. The score would stay that way through the first half and for about 70 total minutes before the Warriors struck again later in the second half.
Senior defender and team captain
Thomas Janz corralled a loose ball at midfield during the 76th minute and dribbled down the left side, beating two defenders in the process. Janz found his way into the penalty box and put the ball past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season and third of his career, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
Just over three minutes later, senior midfielder
Matthew Johnson received a pass from senior defender
Matt Ryan. Johnson worked his way out of a crowd of three Menlo College defenders and found an open spot in the net for his first goal of the year and third of his career as well, which gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Javier Rosales played well between the posts, notching four saves, including a leaping, one-handed punch in the second half that kept the Oaks off the scoreboard.
Tuesday's game against Notre Dame de Namur begins at 4 p.m. The Warriors return home on Sunday to take on the Sonoma State Seawolves at 11:30 a.m.
