No. 24 CSUDH edges Warriors 2-1

Carson -- The 24th-ranked Toros showed their resiliency against a tough Cal State Stanislaus squad, taking a 2-1 win after Corrie Hirokawa scored 19 second into the match.

Hirokawa had a goal and an assist as CSUDH improved to 12-2-3, 7-2-2 CCAA, coming within two points of CCAA South Division leader UC San Diego with three games left in the regular season.

With Chico State defeating UC San Diego 1-0 on the road Friday night, the Warriors fall back to second place two points behind the Wildcats. The Warriors are now 9-7-2 overall and 7-3-2 in the CCAA.

Hirokawa enjoyed the fastest goal of her Toro career just 18 seconds into the contest, taking a touch from Kelly Matosian after a scramble in the box and beating CSUS keeper Jessica Sitarz with a low blast near side for a very quick 1-nil lead.

The Warriors would answer CSUDH's goal at the 23:11 mark, however, as Adrienne Sorenson took a cross from Kaity Bojorquez, and beat Toro keeper Alyssa Congdon far post for the equalizer.

"I am really proud of team, they battled for the whole 90 minutes," CSUS head coach Gabe Bolton said. "When you give you a goal a goal in the first 19 seconds, it could have been demoralizing, but they kept themselves in the game entire match."

Some questionable calls made the difference in the contest. Dominguez Hills' second goal, scored by Vyonne Vasquez in the 79th minute appeared to be off-sides but the call was not made to give CSUDH the advantage.

Sorenson also had another chance to notch a goal but her breakaway score called off.

Despite out-shooting the Warriors 20-2, many of the 20 shots were long distance attempts that amounted to little threat. The Toros ended up with seven shots on goal.

Stanislaus will take on UC San Diego Sunday in La Jolla.
