The Warriors showed some early-season promise from the get-go on Thursday in their exhibition game against Division I University of the Pacific, but the Tigers showed their depth in an 81-59 victory over the Warriors at the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton.
The Warriors were led by Duane Jones with 19 points, who went 3-6 from beyond the arc. Rick Cardoso pulled down nine rebounds for the Warriors.
Pacific played a total of 13 players and all but two of them scored, while every single player grabbed at least one rebound. The Tigers were led in scoring by Chad Troyer with 14 points. Michael Nunnally took care of the boards for Pacific, grabbing eight rebounds.
The game was fast-paced from the start. The Warriors took an early 7-2 lead with all seven points coming from Duane Jones. Jones led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Pacific wouldn't let the Warriors get too comfortable, going on an 8-0 run to make a game of it.
The Warriors closed the score to 17-16 minutes later but that would be the closest the Warriors would get for the rest of the night, as Pacific answered with a 5-0 run of their own and never looked back.
A Tigers 10-0 run fueled by perimeter shooting pushed the lead to 35-19 with under 10 minutes to play in the first half. At the break, Pacific led the Warriors 46-25.
In the second half, the Warriors played with a quicker pace and closed the lead to 18, thanks in part to two three-pointers by Jones.
Later in the half, trailing by 19 at 55-36, the Warriors' Calvin Westbrook hit two straight three-pointers to cut the Tigers' lead to 13. Westbrook would finish the night with seven points and five rebounds. After a Pacific timeout, Scott Behrs added another three-pointer to bring the Warriors within 10.
Cal State Stanislaus seemed to be playing even with Pacific for most of the game, but had problems capitalizing on opportunities from turnovers and Pacific offensive fouls. The Warriors also shot just 56 percent from the free throw line, going 9-16.
The Warriors played hard in the waning minutes of the game despite being down by more than 20 points. A couple of quick steals brought the deficit under 20, but Pacific iced the game with a three-pointer at just under a minute to play.
The Warriors have three more Division I opponents left on their exhibition schedule this season. The team will travel to Southern California on Saturday to face Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 7 p.m. The Warriors' first home game of the season will be at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 23 against Dominican University of California as part of the County Bank Classic basketball tournament.
