LONG-RANGE THREAT
The Warriors have committed to the three-ball this season, and early on, it seems to have paid off. Despite the team's 2-4 record, Cal State Stanislaus leads the CCAA in 3-pointers made with 53 so far this season. Leading the way for the team is sophomore guard
Calvin Westbrook with 15 and senior point guard
Duane Jones with 10. It has been perimeter shooting that has kept the Warriors close in games and helped them pull away for the win.
WESTBROOK PERFECT AT THE LINE
Westbrook is the lone player left in the CCAA with a perfect free-throw percentage. After connecting on all six of his free throw attempts on Friday, Westbrook has converted 21 of 21 from the line this season to lead the conference. The school record for consecutive free throws made is 27, set by Paul Brogan during the 1988-1989 season. As a team, the Warriors are second in the CCAA at 76.4 percent.
FAMILIAR FOE
The Warriors may have a slight advantage in Saturday's game against Puget Sound. Warrior assistant coach Steve Nemeth served as an assistant coach with the Loggers from 1991-1996. Nemeth's knowledge will lend a hand in helping the Warriors know how to plan for the Loggers' next move if Warrior head coach Keith Larsen wants to make a change during the game.
COLVIN NETS 22
Senior
Heath Colvin netted a season-high 22 points in last Wednesday's win over Chico State. He was 8 for 15 from the field and made five of six free throws for his second 20-point game of the season. Colvin's personal-best was 26 points, set last January in a game against Cal Poly Pomona … Colvin added 15 points in Friday's game in La Jolla, giving him five double-digit scoring games this season … Colvin is picked as Warrior of the Week for this 37 point output last week.
BEHRS WENT DOWNTOWN
Showing his range, forward
Scott Behrs made five three-pointers against Chico State last week and finished with a career-high 17 points. All of his shot attempts were three-pointers and he made five on eight tries. He also pulled five rebounds and was the difference in the Warriors' win over the Wildcats.
OFFENSIVE LEADERS
Two Warriors are in the top 10 in scoring among CCAA players. Senior
Heath Colvin is seventh, averaging 16.2 points per game and Westbrook is 10th at 14.7 points a game. Colvin scored a season-high 22 points against Chico State last week. Westbrook had 26 points in two games last week.
WHAT'S MISSING?
The Warriors are 1-3 this season in games decided by less than five points. The team's sole win was an 86-82 victory in the CCAA opener against Chico State on Nov. 28 at Warrior Arena. Last season the Warriors had a 7-4 record in similar games. The Warriors never led in Friday's loss against UC San Diego, but were within one point with 10 seconds to play.
JONES DOING THE DISHING
Senior point guard
Duane Jones also set a new career-high with nine assists last Wednesday. He now has 25 for the season and is averaging 4.17 per game, which ranks him sixth in the conference.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Coach Keith Larsen emphasized that he would like to see the team's assist-turnover ratio improve, and the Warriors did just that. No longer at the bottom of the CCAA, the Warriors' ratio is now 0.70.
Duane Jones leads the team with 13 steals and 25 assists, good for fifth and sixth-best in the CCAA, respectively.
NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED
Puget Sound has been one of the best NCAA Division III teams in the west over the past four seasons, amassing an 87-19 overall record, winning three Northwest Conference titles and finishing as the No. 1 ranked team in the west region three years in a row from 2004-2006. The Loggers' signature win came in December of 2005 over division I UC Riverside.
HEAD COACH KEITH LARSEN
Keith Larsen is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Warriors. He is the ninth head coach in the history of CSUS men's basketball. Since 2003, Larsen has posted a record of 44-72, including a 14-13 season in 2005-06, the program's first winning season since 2002-03. The 2005-06 team finished as one of the hottest teams in the region, posting a 9-2 record (with nine wins out of 10 during the stretch) to finish the season … Prior to joining CSUS, Larsen was the head coach at Menlo College where he posted a 81-68 record in six seasons and led the Oaks to two conference championships … He has also worked under Mike Montgomery as an assistant at Stanford (1992-97) and Bob Williams at Meno (1987-98) … Larsen is a 1985 graduate of San Francisco State.
