TURLOCK --- Running for the first time in a competitive race on campus, the Cal State Stanislaus men's and women's cross country teams felt right at home as they swept the Stanislaus Invitational on Saturday. As expected, Erin Frier and
Bobby Olivera won the individual 6K and 8K races, respectively.
The Warriors women's team collected 16 team points, finishing 1st through 4th in a low-key meet that opens the season. The meet also served as the preview for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships later this season.
This is the first time the Warriors run on the newly designed campus-loop, figure-8 course. The Stanislaus Invitational used to be held at the Legion Park in Modesto.
"I think being on campus is great, compared to going to Modesto...This is a great spectator course," Warrior head coach
Kim Duyst said. "Here we can showcase our campus. The course features some grass, some dirt, not all pavement and it's very scenic. We really need to work in cross country to make it more of a spectator sport."It's great being here, the kids feel at home. I am really happy with how the course ran"
Frier, who was an All-CCAA and All-Region runner last year, finished with a time of 22 minutes and 22 seconds. She had a goal of breaking the sub-22 mark to start the season.
"It's a really nice course," said Frier, who led from start to finish. "When coach said we were going to run here, I wasn't sure about how it would go. It's not really a tough course as far as the terrain but I think people will be surprised. It was more difficult than what people would expect."
Frier finished ahead of teammates Cherise McNair, who clocked 22:59. Clarissa Rivera and Marrisa Hager followed minutes later. The Warriors also finished 8th through 13th behind a pair of runners from Holy Names and CSU Monterey Bay. CSUMB was led by Leann Morales who finished 7th in 26:03.
On the men's side, Olivera came in at 25:13, 25 seconds ahead of teammate
Vicente Moreno.
Jose Morales of Stanislaus was third (26:14). Manny Lopez, Warriors assistant coach ran attached, finished fourth and six more Warriors crossed the finish line behind him giving CSUS 15 team points. CSUMB was second with 50 points.
"We were really happy with Erin and Bobby. We knew they would be our top finishers, but they had to work mentally to get through it," Duyst said. "I am happy with their times. With everybody else, we needed get racing and now we can re-evaluate where we are as a team. Overall, I am pretty happy with how we did with our first meet."
Cal State Stanislaus will travel to Boise, Idaho to participate in the Bob Firman Invitational next weekend to preview the course, which will be used as this year's NCAA Regional Championships.
The Warriors will host the CCAA Championships on campus on Oct. 20.
