Warriors nearly upset No. 6 CSUSB

1/11/2008 9:27:21 PM

TURLOCK - The Warriors proved Friday night they could hang with the best in the country. Unfortunately they couldn't hang on long enough, falling 83-74 against No. 6-ranked Cal State San Bernardino in overtime at Warrior Arena.

With just 27 seconds left on the clock, senior Scott Behrs came through in the clutch for the second game in a row with a 3-pointer from the right side to tie the game at 66. The Warriors actually had a chance to win in brilliant fashion. The Coyotes' Lance Ortiz turned the ball over after Behrs' trey, giving the Warriors one last chance.

After dribbling around midcourt, senior Duane Jones drove into the key and dished it to senior Rick Cardoso. Cardoso bobbled the ball, fell backwards and put up a desperation shot that hit the back, then front of the rim as time expired.

The Warriors scored one basket a minute into overtime and then went cold. Cal State San Bernardino went on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach and escape with a win.

"Obviously I'm proud of the effort at the end," Warrior head coach Keith Larsen said. "When you compete against a team that's good, it's a positive. We just need to keep building on that."

Three Warriors were in double figures Friday, led by Calvin Westbrook's 20 points. Jones and Cardoso had 16 a piece.

The Coyotes were led by Michael Earl, who posted a double-double scoring 19 points and nabbing 10 rebounds. Ortiz added 15 points.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Warriors finally evened it up with 4:25 to play in the first half, 28-28. The Warriors headed into the locker room at halftime with a one-point edge, 37-36, thanks in part to a foul called with just 0.05 seconds left on the clock that sent Jones to the line.

Jones went 9-9 from the charity stripe. Westbrook extended his school and California Collegiate Athletic Association record for most consecutive free throws made, going 2-2 and putting the streak at 33.

The game was the second overtime thriller in a row Friday, after the women's team hit a late 3-pointer to send the game into overtime, only to fall in the extra period, 76-71.

The loss drops the Warriors' record to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA. The Coyotes won their fifth in a row, pushing their record to 12-1 and 5-0 in conference play.

The Warriors take on Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 p.m. Saturday before heading out for a five-game roadtrip.
