Warriors lose lead, fall to Cal Poly Pomona

1/12/2008 8:46:20 PM

For the second night in a row the Warriors led at halftime but could not hold on, falling 77-71 to Cal Poly Pomona Saturday in the final game of a four-game homestand.

The Warriors held a 69-68 lead with 2 minutes, 38 seconds left to play. Calvin Westbrook and Duane Jones both missed 3-point attempts in the final 30 seconds. Westbrook's attempt would've given the Warriors the lead. Jones' shot would've closed the gap to 75-74 Broncos, but a rebound off the miss allowed Angelo Tsagarakis to run the length of the court and tack on the final blow.

The Warriors struggled with the 3-point shot all night, shooting just 29.6 percent from beyond the arc, including an 18.8 percent showing in the second half. The Warriors outshot the Broncos overall with a 48.2 percent field goal percentage to the Broncos' 44.9 percent.

Cal State Stanislaus was led in scoring by Jones and Heath Colvin, who scored 17 points each. Jones had three more steals on the night, giving him nine for the weekend. Westbrook added 12 points. Scott Behrs had eight rebounds to go along with his four points.

The Broncos were led by Larry Gordon, who posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Three other Broncos scored in double figures, including Tsagarakis with 19.

The Warriors were called for 10 more fouls than Cal Poly Pomona, 21-11. The Broncos went to the line three times as much as the Warriors did, attempting 36 free throws compared to the Warriors' 12.

Westbrook's record streak of consecutive free throws ended Saturday at 33 when he hit front rim on his first attempt of the night. Westbrook made the rest of his shots to finish 3-4 on the night.

The loss drops Cal State Stanislaus' record to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Broncos improve to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA.

The Warriors head out on a five-game road trip, their longest of the season, beginning Friday at Sonoma State. The Warriors' next home game will be at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 2 against UC San Diego.
