ROHNERT PARK --- The Warriors started the toughest part of the schedule with bad news on Friday as they dropped to Sonoma State, 69-56, at the Seawolf Gym.
The Cal State Stanislaus men's team shot just 39.6 percent from the field and ran into a hot Sonoma State team as CSUS dropped to 3-11 overall and 2-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Sonoma State snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 7-6, 3-4 CCAA.
The loss was the Warriors' third straight and eighth in the last nine. Stanislaus just began a stretch where it will have to play 9 of 10 CCAA contests on the road.
Friday night, the Warriors were led by senior guard
Duane Jones, who had 15 points on 6 for 12 shooting. The rest of the team, however, shot just 15 for 41. Jones also had three steals and made two of the team's six three-poointers.
J.R. Cassita,
Rick Cardoso and
Heath Colvin each had nine points.
The Warriors came in to the game boasting the conference's most potent offense at 77.7 points per game. They started quickly, taking a 17-8 lead over the Seawolves in the first five minutes of the game. The Seawolves, however, quickly rebounded and proceeded to outscore the Warriors 37-18 for the remainder of the half to lead at the break by ten, 45-35.
The closest CSUS got in the second half was when Cassita made a layup with 8:19 to play to pull within eight at 57-49.
Sonoma State had three players -- Steve Cornett, Andrew Kochevar and Ben Washington -- each with 14 points. Cornett also lead all players with nine rebounds to go with two blocks and four assists.
The Warriors continue the road trip north with a Saturday night game at Humboldt State's East Gym.
