CARSON — The Warriors went ice cold in the last six and a half minutes of the game as they lost to a streaking Cal State Dominguez Hills team, 71-62, Saturday night in the Torodome.
Heath Colvin and
Duane Jones led the Warriors with 19 and 17 points, respectively, but the Warriors dropped to 3-14 overall and 2-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CSUS extended its losing streak to six games.
Rodney Yearby took over the game late in the second half to finish with 19 points and nine rebounds. Jerrell Smith chipped in 16 points as the Toros extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 10-6 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA.
Stanislaus trailed by as many as 10 points five minutes into the second half after a jumper by CSUDH's Jonathan Toliver to make it 49-39. The Warriors, however, got a trey from
Duane Jones to start a rally to eventually cut the Toro lead to two with a 15-7 run. Colvin's bucket at 6:56 made the score 56-54.
The Warriors, though, managed just three field goals the rest of the way and watched Dominguez Hills regain a 10-point lead on a pair of Toliver free throws at 1:29 left.
Both teams shot well in the first half in a closely contested game with CSUDH connecting on 53.6 percent of its attempts. The Warriors shot 12-for-24 in the first 20 minutes of play.
CSU Stanislaus, which entered the week the CCAA's top free throw shooting team averaging 75.4 percent, was just 9 of 16 from the line Saturday night. The Warriors were also cold from long distance with just one three-pointer in 13 attempts in the second half (5-for-22 for the game).
The Warriors will have to play one more road game next week — a travel-partner game at Chico State on Thursday — before returning home to host UC San Diego Saturday night.
