Warriors beat CSUMB with late free throws

1/5/2008 8:49:40 PM

TURLOCK - Scott Behrs' only two points of the night came when the Warriors needed them most. Behrs converted two free throws with 1.3 seconds on the clock Saturday night to give the Warriors a 78-76 win over Cal State Monterey Bay, snapping a five-game losing streak.

With the game tied 76-76, Behrs grabbed a rebound at the opposite end of the court after the Otters' Joe Mitchell missed a last-second layup that would have given Cal State Monterey Bay the lead. Mitchell pulled on Behrs' arm reaching for the ball and the official blew the whistle with just over one tick on the clock.

The free throws were Behrs' only points of the game after getting in early foul trouble. He sat on the bench for most of the second half with four fouls.

"I'm just glad that even though not everybody got a chance to play their best game, the few players that played well carried us, like Rick Cardoso and Heath (Colvin)," Behrs said.

Free throws were the story of the night, as Calvin Westbrook surpassed Paul Brogan's 19-year-old shool record of 27 consecutive free throws made by going 5-5 from the line. Westbrook has now made 31 free throws in a row and shows no signs of slowing down.

""I feel really comfortable at the line," Westbrook said. "That is the easiest shot in the game and I expect to make them all."

The Warriors had four players in double figures Saturday, led by Rick Cardoso, who posted his second double-double of the season with a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Heath Colvin scored 18, Duane Jones had 16 and Westbrook had 12.

The Warriors led by as many as 20 points during the first half. The score ran up to 28-8 with a Colvin layup at 9:16 in the first half. From there, the Otters went on a 21-4 run. Jones hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to make the halftime score 37-29.

Cal State Monterey Bay was led by Augie Johnston with 18 points. Mitchell had a double-double for the Otters with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Otters took their first lead of the game five minutes into the second half, 44-43. Back and forth the teams went, until the Warriors went on a 7-0 run with 5:45 left in the game. The Warriors led by nine with 2:28 on the clock, but the Otters made six straight free throws, four of them coming from a technical foul called on Terry Johnson.

Johnston hit a 3-pointer for Cal State Monterey Bay to tie the game at 76-76 with 1:35 on the clock. Cardoso missed a layup at the other end, giving the Otters possession with 49 seconds left. Johnston tried passing the ball the length of the court, but Colvin stole it for the Warriors.

Coming out of a timeout, Colvin missed his chance to give the Warriors the lead with a jumper. Monterey set up for the final play but could not convert, and Behrs grabbed the rebound. After Behrs' free throws, the Otters tried passing the ball deep for a desperation shot, but Colvin picked it off again to end the game.

The win brings the Warriors' overall record to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA. The Otters fall to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA. The Warriors' next game will be against first-place Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
