ROHNERT PARK — The Warriors women's soccer team scored twice early, but Sonoma State scored three unanswered goals as the Seawolves defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 3-2, in overtime Friday.
Sonoma State improved to 14-4-1, 9-3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and snapped Stanislaus's three-match winning streak. The Warriors are now 8-6-4 and 4-6-3 in conference play. Cal State Stanislaus will complete its season on Sunday at Humboldt State.
With two goals on Friday, Cal State Stanislaus set a new school record now with 42 goals this season. The Warriors had already got other offensive marks with assists and points in a season.
The Warriors got on the board early with their quickest goal this season when
Briana McClain found the back of the net just inside the 6:00 mark.
Gennaka Fox made a great pass to McClain and McClain "showed amazing composure and finished," CSUS head coach Gabe Bolton said.
Adrienne Sorenson would score exactly 11 minutes later to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Sorenson's goal was the team's record breaker. The goal was assisted by
Jenna Kasch and
Melissa Phillips.
"We gave a tremendous effort today," Bolton said. "I am proud of the soccer we played. We created great opportunities throughout the match."
Unfortunately for the Warriors, Sonoma State even the score in a hurry. The Seawolves scored their first two goals in a span of two and a half minute to tie the match.
Jaci Davey scored at 32:57 and was followed by Alexica Bosque at 35:22 to even the score.Tracy Webster would end the match with a score 5:41 into the first overtime.
"Defensively we lost our concentration a couple of times and Sonoma made us pay," Bolton said. "It was a great match and both teams played good hard soccer."
