TURLOCK -- Plenty of season and career highs were set Friday night by the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team as they won in dominating fashion, 81-59, over the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers in the second game of the County Bank Classic at Warrior Arena.
The win moves the Warriors to 3-0 on the season, the first time they have started so well since the 2000-01 season. The Keelhaulers fall to 2-4 overall.
The Warriors were led in scoring by
Matt Ibewiro, who had his third-straight 20-point game with 20 points Friday night. Ibewiro just missed his third double-double of the season in as many games, as he finished with eight rebounds. Also in double-digit scoring for the Warriors was
Michael Dyson, who had a career-high 16 points, and
Chris Hayes who finished with 14.
The Keelhaulers had two players score in double digits. Alex Raj led the way with 15 and Andrew Medeiros had 14 points.
Tough defense by the Warriors kept the Keelhaulers at bay all night, as they shot just 34.5 percent from the field, including only 30 percent during the second half. The Keelhaulers were 3-for-17 from the 3-point line in the game.
"We worked on changing some defenses up," said Warriors Head Coach Keith Larsen.
The Warriors struggled with shooting the ball in the first half, only making 40.6 percent of their shots and allowing Maritime to keep it close with a 37-28 score in favor of the Warriors at halftime, but a 51.9 percent showing in the second half coupled with Cal Maritime's abscence at the offensive end led to the route in the second half.
The Warriors'
Rod Stephens set a career high in points with seven and senior
Terry Johnson set a career high in blocks with three.
In the first game of the County Bank Classic Friday, Puget Sound ran away from Dominican University with a 76-64 win, playing a tough full-court press the entire 40 minutes that eventually wore down the Penguins.
The Warriors continue play in the County Bank Classic at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday when they take on Dominican University.
