Humboldt eliminates Warriors from postseason contention

2/22/2008 8:54:14 PM

TURLOCK -- From the outset Friday night Humboldt State dominated the Warriors in every aspect of the game, eventually running away with a 118-85 victory in Warrior Arena that eliminated the Warriors of any hope for qualifying for the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Sonoma State defeated Chico State in Chico, 90-71, to put the Warriors four games out of the eighth and final spot with just three games to play. The loss drops the Warriors' record to 5-19 overall and 4-13 in the CCAA. Humboldt State, who has already clinched a berth in the conference tournament, moves to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in CCAA play.

The Lumberjacks had six players score in double figures Friday, two of whom came off the bench. Last week's player of the week Devin Peal scored 20 points and had four rebounds. Grayson Moyer added 18, Cy Vandermeer had 16 and Will Scheufelt had 13 points. Everett Smith scored 12 points and had five rebounds off the bench while Tyler Burns had 11 points coming in after the tip.

Heath Colvin found his scoring touch after struggling last weekend, scoring 20 points, his fifth time this season with 20-plus points. Rick Cardoso scored 19 points and had eight rebounds, while Duane Jones added 18 points with a 4-7 showing from the 3-point line.

The 118 points scored by Humboldt State was one shy of the school record of 119 points set in 2000 against BYU-Hawaii. The 33-point defeat is the Warriors' biggest loss of the season, topping a 29-point loss against Division I Nevada-Reno on Dec. 31, 2007.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 10-point, 13-3 lead just 2 minutes, 44 seconds into the game. Humboldt State would push it to a 15-point lead about 2:45 later and the route was on. The Lumberjacks shot 75 percent in the first half and still had a 67 percent overall field goal percentage midway through the second half before finishing at 60 percent.

Humboldt's lead grew to 24 points before halftime when the Warriors went on a 9-3 run that cut the lead to 18, but a quick layup with six seconds on the clock and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Moyer off a steal put the Lumberjacks back up by 23 at halftime.

The story was much of the same in the second half as Humboldt State pushed the lead to as much as 34 points, tying the Warriors' largest defecit of the season when they trailed by 34 against Cal State San Bernardino with 7:02 left in the second half on Feb. 16.

The Warriors continue their four-game homestand Saturday against Sonoma State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
