Warriors come from behind to beat Sonoma

2/23/2008 8:41:03 PM

TURLOCK -- Rick Cardoso blocked Ben Washington's layup and grabbed the rebound with two seconds left in the game and the Warriors escaped with a 78-75 win over Sonoma State Saturday at Warrior Arena.

Cardoso had three blocks on the evening, none bigger than his rejection of Washington, and with those three he set a new school record for blocks in a season with 40, breaking his own school record set last season with 38.

"(Cardoso) is an all-conference player right now," Warrior head coach Keith Larsen said. "He's as good as anyone."

Cardoso finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, pushing his career total to 619 after surpassing the 600-point total on Friday night. Heath Colvin led the Warriors with 21 points and Scott Behrs was perfect from the field, going 6-6, including 3-3 from the 3-point line to finish with 15 points.

The Warriors went ahead 76-75 on a Colvin 6-foot jumper with 1 minute, 36 seconds on the clock. Sonoma State's Steve Cornett couldn't respond at the other end and Cardoso pulled down one of his 12 rebounds on the night.

Cardoso was fouled at the other end and missed both free throws, giving the Seawolves a chance for a thrilling win with the last shot, but it would not be so as Cardoso sent Washington's shot back with authority.

"Even though we have some highs and lows, I'm so proud of the turnaround from one night to the next," Larsen said. "We know it's inside of them. Whatever button we need to push, we pushed it tonight."

A 12-6 run to start the second half brought the Warriors to within one, 51-52, four minutes into the half. Sonoma State would expand its lead to 10 points five minutes later, but the Warriors fought back and took the lead  for the first time since 14:08 in the first half at 66-65 with 6;40 to play in the game.

The Warriors trailed by as many as eight points in the first half before closing the gap to one with 2:11 to go before halftime. Sonoma State went on a run, however, and iced a 9-3 run with a 3-pointer four seconds before the buzzer to take a 46-39 lead into the locker room.

The Warriors close out the season with two final home games starting Thursday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State L.A. visits Friday for the season finale. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
