SEASIDE — Rick Cardoso had a career night but it wasn't enough as the Warriors put up a great effort in losing to Cal State Monterey Bay, 90-83, Friday night at the Otter Sports Center.

Cardoso had his third double-double of the season with 23 points and 19 rebounds — both career highs —and Heath Colvin scored 21 points but Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 4-16 overall and 3-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Cal State Monterey Bay won its fifth straight game and used a late second-half push to get by the Warriors to improve to 7-12 overall and 6-7 in league play. The Otters were led by Steve Monreal with 21 points. D'Shon Cannon had 18 and Jose Sanchez chipped in 17.

While the Warriors dominated the boards, out-rebounding CSUMB 44-28, they turned the ball over 20 times against Monterey Bay's six.  Stanislaus also cool down in the second half, shooting just 35 percent, after connecting on 63 percent of its shots in the first half.

Stanislaus started the game red-hot connecting on nearly 70 percent of its shots in the early goings and led by 12 eight minutes into the game. J.R. Cassita was on fire early for the Warriors and at one point scored 8 points, including two three-pointers, in 90 seconds to give the Warriors the 23-11 lead. Cassita finished with 17 points - his second highest total of the season.

CSUMB, however, stayed closed thanks to its free throw shooting as the Warriors sent the Otters to the line early and often. Stanislaus had eight team fouls just six minutes into the contest. Monterey Bay would hang close with 15 made three throws despite shooting just 12 of 33 from the field in the opening half.

In the second half, the Otters took advantage of some long range missed shots by the Warriors to start the second half and took off to a 11-point lead halfway through.

The Warriors would cut the lead to five late in the game when Calvin Westbrook made a layup with 24 seconds left, but the Otters held on for the final score. Westbrook, who was 6-for-6 from the line, finished with 10 points.

Stanislaus will take on San Francisco State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Webcast of the game will be available online at WarriorAthletics.com
