Warriors rally comes up short again

SAN FRANCISCO — It was more or less the same story on Saturday. The Warriors jump out on top and the opponents come back and lead at the break. Then the opponents open-up a bigger lead in the second half before the Warriors rally back late in the game. Then the Warriors make it close before losing by a larger margin because of late free throws.

That's pretty much the story of the season of late as the Cal State Stanislaus men's team dropped a 93-79 decision to San Francisco State Saturday night.

With the loss, the Warriors are now 4-17 overall and 3-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco State completes its weekend sweep and improved to 14-7, 9-5 in the CCAA.

Rick Cardoso had another 20-point game, this time with 21 points to lead Cal State Stanislaus. Duane Jones scored 18 and Heath Colvin was held to 10 after netting 21 Friday night. Cardoso was coming off a career night on Friday with 23 points and 19 rebounds.

Like Friday night, Stanislaus jumped out on top early and had an 8-point lead out of the gate. After holding a six-point advantage for most of the first half, the Warriors allowed SFSU to comeback in the final minutes of the period as the Gators took a four-point lead, 44-40, at intermission.

The Gators would turn that lead into an 8-point, 60-52, advantage after an Alex Thomas bucket at 13:13 in the second half. Less than six minutes later, the SFSU lead was up to 13, 71-58, with a Robert Hayes score. CSUS would comeback once again and cut the lead to four after a 12-3 run that was capped by a Jones three-pointer with 3:41 to go.

San Francisco State, though, would turn the Warriors away and held Stanislaus without a field goal for 2 1/2 minutes to regain control of the game. CSUS, in fact, scored just two field goals after Jones's three-pointer that pulled the team within four.

SFSU converted on all 12 free throw attempts inside the two-minute mark for the win.

Thomas led five Gators in double-figures in scoring with 21 points. He also had eight rebounds. Will Logan had 15 and Martin Flores chipped in 14 for SFSU.
