Stanislaus, San Marcos play to scoreless tie

8/31/2008 2:04:45 PM

SAN MARCOS — The Warriors probably wish they could have saved a goal from Thursday's match for today. After playing tough for 110 minutes, the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team picked up a scoreless draw at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday.

Stanislaus scored nine goals in a 9-2 win over Northwest Nazarene at home to open the 2008 season and is now 1-0-1 heading into next Friday's non-conference match against a strong Hawaii-Hilo squad in Turlock.

"Towards the end of the game and in both overtimes we really started to play good soccer and we created some amazing chances to win the game," CSUS head coach Gabriel Bolton said.

The Warriors had two great opportunities in the second sudden death overtime period to take home the win, but came up empty. Jessica Cordova's shot was redirected wide and Melissa Phillip's 50-yard free kick to Briana McClain at the six-yard box that was nicely saved by the CSUSM goalkeeper.

Bolton also gave credit to Gennaka Fox, Jenna Kasch and Kim DiNardo for controlling the midfield and also praised the defensive unit for being "fantastic."

"San Marcos is a very aggressive and physical team," Bolton said. "You have to give them a lot of credit for playing 45 minutes down a player. They gave a great effort. It took us a while to catch up to the speed of the field and the San Marcos style of play."
