TURLOCK — After a successful pre-season, the #24 Cal State Stanislaus (4-1-1) women's soccer team opened up California Collegiate Athletic Association play Sunday with a tough loss to the Sonoma State Seawolves (5-1-0), 1-0, at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.
The first half of play was dominated by the Warriors on the field, but the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead into the break. Stanislaus outshot their opponent 8-4 and created numerous opportunities but just could not find the back of the net.
The Seawolves made their one first half shot on goal count as Tracy Webster took a pass from Kiley Brown in the middle of the goal box and punched it past Warrior keeper
Jessica Sitarz into the right side of the net for the only goal of the match.
"We completely outplayed them in the first half, created a lot of chances and just got a little unlucky," noted head coach Gabe Bolton. "Their goal came against the run of play, but you have to give Sonoma credit for creating a beautiful scoring chance," Bolton added.
Despite taking only three shots in the second half of play, the Warriors still had some chances.
Kayln Pottorff created a one versus one opportunity, but had the ball stopped by Seawolf goalkeeper, Courtney Grixti. The Warriors also failed to finish chances on corner kicks, late in the match.
"Our defenders did a good job and we played well throughout the match, things just did not fall into place for us," said Bolton.
The Warriors will look to rebound as they welcome CCAA opponent Cal State San Bernardino to town on Friday September 19, kickoff is slated for 3:00 pm.
