1/17/2009 9:43:07 PM

TURLOCK -- The hot shooting of Cal State Dominguez Hills' Jerrell Smith and Jamel Ward proved to be too much for Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night as the Toros overcame an early deficit and walked away with a 74-61 win at Warrior Arena.

The Toros earn their fourth win in five games to improve to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association to move into a three-way tie atop the conference. They are now 7-1 on the road this season. Cal State Stanislaus falls to 5-8 overall and 1-7 in CCAA play.

Cal State Dominguez Hills opened the game with an 8-0 stretch, but the Warriors responded with a 15-4 run of their own to take their only lead of the night, a three-point edge with 14 minutes, 18 seconds to play in the first half. The Toros would answer with a 16-3 run that put them up by 10 points at 28-18, a lead they would not surrender.

Before halftime, four different players hit 3-pointers for Cal State Dominguez Hills to help the team to a 16-point lead at the break, 43-27. The Toros led by as much as 27 in the second half with 10:34 to play, but the Warriors had some key players come in off the bench to whittle the deficit down to 13, including a 12-2 run in the final 4:03 to get the final score.

Redshirt freshman Bryan Castillo had a career-high 12 points, all 3-pointers, on a 4-for-5 shooting night. He also notched two assists and pulled down a rebound. Matt Ibewiro led all scorers with 13 points and also had six rebounds. Chris Teevan had his third-consecutive double-digit scoring night with 11 points.

"I was shooting around (Friday) night for about an hour," Castillo said about his time spent after the Warriors' 73-71 win over Cal State L.A., in which Castillo played zero minutes. "(Larsen) called my name, it was a surprise, so I just took advantage of what I had."

Robert Willhite also had 13 points off the bench for the Toros to lead all scorers with Ibewiro. James Cawthorne had 12 points off the bench and Ward had 10 points. The Toros outrebounded Cal State Stanislaus 41-29 and outshot them 46.6 percent to 43.4 percent, although the Warriors shot better from beyond the arc, a 45 percent clip to Cal State Dominguez Hills' 41.2 percent.

The Warriors will close out their five-game homestand at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against the Chico State Wildcats, 67-49 losers against Cal State L.A. Saturday.
