TURLOCK -- It was deja vu all over again Wednesday night at Warrior Arena, as the Warriors'
Benny Koochoie ended up with the ball in his hands after a turnover with the seconds ticking down and the game on the line, but this time the miracle was not to be. Chico State survived to come away with a 52-51 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
Down 52-51 with 36 seconds to play, Koochoie came up with the loose ball after Chico State's Justin Argenal mishandled it. Koochoie dribbled the length of the court, just as he did Friday in the Warriors' last-second win over Cal State L.A., and head coach Keith Larsen called a timeout.
The crowd of over 370 stood up to cheer for the Warriors coming out of the timeout in the waning moments of the game, hoping for a repeat performance and another last-second victory. Koochoie took the ball on the in-bounds and dribbled around the perimeter. With less than five seconds left, he stepped just over the 3-point line and took a deep 2-point jumper that clanged off the front rim. Still with the time ticking down,
Michael Dyson came down with an offensive rebound but could not convert the putback. The ball bounced far off the rim and the buzzer sounded, sealing the Wildcats' win.
The win moves the Wildcats' record to 6-10 overall and 3-6 in the CCAA. The Warriors fall to 5-9 and 1-8 in CCAA play. The Chico State win snaps a four-game winning streak by the Warriors in the series.
The Warriors were outrebounded for the 11th time in 14 games this season, this time by a 39-31 mark. They shot just 37 percent from the field while Chico State shot 41.2 percent, including 50 percent in the second half.
Matt Ibewiro led the Warriors with 14 points and eight rebounds, his eighth game of the year with at least 10 points and five boards.
Chris Hayes was in double digits for the third time in four games with 11 points. Hayes improved his CCAA-leading 3-point percentage by going 3-for-4 from downtown.
Andy Bocian, the CCAA's leading scorer, led all players with 22 points on a 9-for-19 night from the field. Bocian took nine 3-point shots in the game, converting two, which was more than the Warriors took as a team the entire night (eight). The Warriors shot 62.5 percent from beyond the arc to Chico State's 26.3 percent.
Cal State Stanislaus will travel to La Jolla Friday to face the UC San Diego Tritons. They return to Turlock for a four-game homestand beginning Jan. 30 against Cal State Monterey Bay.
