POMONA — Against the CCAA's second-best defensive unit, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team shot just 39 percent from the field as the Warriors dropped their fourth straight conference game in a 90-66 loss at Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night.
The Warriors, however, managed to make a season-high 12 three-pointers before falling to 4-5 overall and 0-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 6-3 and 2-2 in CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus connected on 52.2 percent of its three-point attempts against a Pomona team that is near the bottom of the conference in three-point field goal percentage defensively. Cal Poly Pomona, however, allows an average of 64.2 points per game entering the weekend — the second best total among the 11 conference teams.
The Warriors, on the other hand, ranked first in the CCAA with 82.1 points per game but was held to 66 points Saturday night.
Sophomore guard
Casey Cutts led the Warriors with a career-high 19-point performance. Cutts had six three-pointers.
Michael Dyson had 11 points and six rebounds while
Brandon Curtis chipped in eight points with a pair of three's.
Cal Poly Pomona, which averaged just 65.8 points a game before the weekend, led by double-digits most of the way and took a 38-22 lead at halftime. Larry Gordon led five players in double digits in scoring with 22 points. He also had 10 rebounds. Walter Thompson scored 18 and Robert Summers added 16 points.
Cal State Stanislaus made three consecutive triples to cut the Pomona lead to nine points at 12:51 in the second half, but Cal Poly Pomona returned with a 6-0 run to retain control. Taking advantage of miss long bombs, fouls and rebounding, the Broncos kept rolling in the second period and built a 22-point lead at 78-56 inside the six-minute mark.
The Warriors will host Sonoma State and Humboldt State next weekend to begin a five-game stretch where they will play CCAA games in Warrior Arena.
