Michael Dyson was an entirely different player Saturday night than the Gators of San Francisco State saw back on Dec. 5, 2008 in San Francisco. Dyson had a career night in leading the Warriors to a 74-64 win over SFSU, avenging an earlier 70-67 loss this season.
Dyson scored a career-high 20 points and tied a career high in rebounds with seven, including going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. In the Warriors' last meeting with San Francisco State, Dyson went 2-for-8 from the field and only had four rebounds in the loss.
The win moves the Warriors' record to 6-11 overall and 2-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco State had a three-game road winning streak snapped as its record fell to 11-8 overall and 5-7 in the CCAA. The win is the Warriors' first against the Gators since 2006-07.
For just the fourth time this season, the Warriors outrebounded their opponent, this time by a 40-28 mark. The team is 4-0 this season when outrebounding the opposing team. The Warriors also outshot their opponent Saturday night by making 48.1 percent of their shots compared to the Gators' 41.1 percent, marking just the sixth occasion that has happened in 2008-09. They have a 5-1 record in those games.
The Warriors' defense held Alex Thomas and Robert Hayes in check Saturday after the pair went for 41 total points in the teams' first meeting. Thomas had 10 and Hayes scored 14. The Gators had four players score in double digits, with Martin Flores (10) and Ryan Wessels (10) joining Thomas and Hayes.
Matt Ibewiro notched his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Benny Koochoie was the other Warrior in double figure scoring with 11 points.
Cal State Stanislaus led for most of the first half before San Francisco State went on an 8-0 run to take a one-point lead, 18-17, with 11 minutes, 16 seconds to play before halftime. The teams went back and forth before the Gators pulled away slightly to head into the break with a 3-point edge, 32-29.
San Francisco State opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Darryl Robinson to push its lead to six, but the Warriors went on a 16-3 run to take the lead, 45-38, and never looked back. They would open up a lead as large as 14 with 1:22 left in the game before San Francisco State began fouling and the teams traded baskets with free throws.
Both of the Warriors' CCAA victories this season have come after trailing at halftime. The team defeated Cal State L.A., 73-71, on Jan. 16, 2009, after trailing 30-28 at halftime.
The Warriors will continue their four-game homestand with two games next weekend, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday with a game against Cal Poly Pomona.
