SAN BERNARDINO -- Four years of earning points each season against Cal State San Bernardino came to an end Sunday, as the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Coyotes in Southern California.
Unity Beddingfield's goal in the 51st minute was all the scoring the Coyotes' defense needed, as it held the Warriors to just 3 shots on the day. Cal State San Bernardino outshot the Warriors 13-3.
Jessica Sitarz had five saves for Cal State Stanislaus.
Our mentality today, especially on defense, was much better," Warriors head coach Gabe Bolton said. "We battled for 90 minutes and did a good job of executing our game plan on defense."
The win for Cal State San Bernardino is its first over the Warriors since 2004 when it won, 3-2, in double overtime in San Bernardino. From 2005 to 2008, the Warriors went 3-0-1 against the Coyotes. The Warriors fall to 7-8-1 overall and 3-8-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Coyotes go to 8-6-2 overall and7-3-2 in CCAA play.
The 1-0 loss is the Warriors' seventh one-goal loss of the season, and the fourth time they have lost by a score of 1-0. The team is 1-7 in games decided by one goal; the lone win coming when they defeated Cal State East Bay, 1-0, on Sept. 20 in Turlock.
We have been in every game this season," Bolton said. "We are very close to where we need to be and we are looking forward to our final four matches."
Early in the second half, Beddingfield collected a pass from junior Katie Liby, dribbled to her left past the onrushing goalkeeper and struck a left-footed shot into the net from near the 18-yard line. It was Beddingfield's third game-winning goal of the season and her fourth goal overall.
"Unfortunately we struggled to generate a consistent attack," Bolton said. "San Bernardino was very aggressive and athletic. We weren't sharp enough to break them down today."
The Warriors return home Friday for their final homestand of the season as they host Humboldt State at 4:30 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
